I was looking at a map this week and saw that there’s a ferry from Harwich to Holland and then it’s a relatively short ride through Germany to Denmark which sounded like an interesting trip but I know nothing about Denmark as a place to ride. Anyone got any experience of touring there that they could share? Thanks.

Went there about 20 ish years ago.
Got the ferry to Denmark itself overnight- doesn’t run any more.
It was summer and I’ve good memories.
First time abroad on my bike (bros 650).
We skipped from place to place as our fancy took us - good roads nice people - not as Scandinavian as I’d imagined.
Didn’t go to Copenhagen as we had to turn home by that point.

It is surprisingly flat
And beer and food are expensive

Not bike related, but I went on holiday to Billund by mistake.

It was February, but it was very grey, grey and flat.

Ridden through it. Bit flat, bit boring, the odd little harbour is pretty but we weren't really exploring Denmark, just passing through to get to Norway.

IIRC correctly it shares a smell with the adjacent part of Germany - pig shit!

Slightly off topic but Denmark related.

Just before Covid a few of us rode to Denmark for a rally called Britannia rally at a place called viborg.

Very well organised and friendly people.

On the Saturday night just before dusk they pulled a trailer out and removed the tarpaulin

Sat there was a ww2 merlin engine which they fired up. Wow

The rally is in August and I think the club have a website

Anyway, as you were

Mrs. D is half Danish so I've been to Denmark a bit and driven to places you wouldn't normally bother seeking out as a visitor.

As above, it's pretty flat. It's a fairly quiet country, fewer people in the whole country than in London. Roads reflect that. I've driven the main/biggest Motorway from Copenhagen across the middle of the country, it's not even as big/busy as something like the A34.

Country roads are nicely maintained IME, mostly 'cause they're not used that much I expect.

Speed limts through towns are low and cousins tell me the Police do not fuck about. I've never seen a Danish copper outside Copenhagen though!

Those with a childish sense of humour would be amused to know those digital signs which tell your speed read "Din Fart".

Everything is expensive. High welfare, high tax state.

I really like Denmark TBH. It always feels like moving slightly into the future to me, everyone is polite, everything is clean and green, people cycle in town rather than driving everywhere. They don't even check your ticket to go on the train, it just doesn't enter into the Danish psyche that you wouldn't pay

Danish Calsberg is better than non-Danish, but that's a low bar to clear. Hope you like Pork and Cabbage.

One other random little fact which I remembered today when driving home.

Flashing your headlights in Denmark conveys no meaning. Speaking to my cousins about this I was a bit surprised...it basically means nothing over there, certainly doesn't mean thanks or that you're letting someone out.

Funnily enough I'm just starting to plan out a trip up there. So it's good to read these posts

Surely it's only surprisingly flat if you thought it was going to be hilly, I've never been but knew that it's flat, amazingly southern Sweden and northern Germany are also flat (I've been to both of those)
