I remember being at Assen in 2006 and seeing a Dutch company called Star Twin were marketing a bike they were manufacturing based on a 3 cylinder 1200cc turbo diesel from the VW Lupo, 205KG and over 200NM of torque, 100BHP. Not sure what happened to them though.

What you want is an Enfield Robin.

Take an Enfield Bullet 500, remove the engine and replace with one from a diesel generator, jobs a goodun.

Wouldn't it be easier to fit bars and a seat to a cement mixer?

Weren't quite a few military bikes diesel? (Logistics stuff - only one fuel type needed for all vehicle types and you can be pretty sure of picking up more wherever you invade).

Diesel bikes must surely be an evolutionary dead end; the only advantage is marginally better fuel economy, whereas there are numerous disadvantages. Besides, electric.

I'm sure there's a diesel running version of the KLR650 perhaps?

My brother has a diesel Enfield - I think they were advertised for "those who had grown out of speed", anyway we disowned him as a result, one redeeming feature is that you can start it in reverse

I saw the diesel Enfield that VD's Zanx built, implementing a Briggs and Stratton cement mixer motor.

It was noisy, and he said it was very slow, but did 200mpg.

I bet every one of those miles was hateful.

I note the auctioneers claim that it has no front suspension, relying on the soft tyres for that function.

What else did they get wrong?

"Chuggy" was its name I believe! Zanx is alive and kicking as I bumped into him on a local FB a year or so back.

Indeed it was, and glad to hear he is still around.

He did own some bikes at the opposite ends of the power spectrum, from his lowly Velo Solex to his 1200 Bandit Turbo
