Gas oven not getting hot enough

Mrs Mango decided we needed a new oven for 2025, so we took out our old gas oven with eye level grill and bought a new gas oven with eye level grill. I insisted on the eye level grill as I like toasted home made bread for breakfast and ovens with the grill in the oven are shite (IMHO).

All the burners and the grill work fine, but the oven has a problem. It under-heats and stuff like oven chips come out soggy after the recommended cooking time/heat. We've wound up using Gas mark 9 to do chips properly, which is clearly not good. I bought an oven thermometer and at Gas mark 7 it reads 190 degrees C, which is about Gas mark 5 and a half by my reckoning.

Is there an easy way to fix this, or should we just do the warranty claim thing? It was bought from Currys though, so expecting an uphill battle if we do go down that route.

My guess would be that there gas feed is being restricted somehow. But i for one would not be going poking around with a gas supply.

Anything brand new goes straight back! As soon as you start trying to fix it yourself you invalidate any future warranty claim. Simply not worth it.

IME with white goods like this Curry's et al just replace for free in the first instance and hardly even ask any Qs.

By all means check the gas is actually turned on, but after than I'd just call it :D

Yeah, I'll call it in tomorrow. But if they replace rather than repair it will be a pain re-assembling the thing - it arrived pretty much as a kit. If you wanted it assembled it was about £100 extra as I recall.

Mention that, quite firmly, emphasise the inconvenience.

At best, they might do it for free, or at a discount.

My coming up to one year old Ikea (AEG) electric oven oven doesn't cook stuff the same as my 20 year old electric oven it replaced. I generally have to use a higher temp and cook it for a bit longer for the same result.

I think it might have something to do with energy ratings or some such bollocks. Maybe 200c on a new oven is way more efficient than an old oven, because on the new oven 200 is actually 160, or something.

Domestic oven calibration is BS anyway. They're just low, medium and high :D

Gas, or air or thermostat. (Or somebody fitted propane jets! I got a set included with my oven).

Dunno about new-fangled gas/fan ovens and the impact of the fan though. I know it's just wizardry in electric ovens...everything cooks in the same time at 20º lower temps. I guess that's the way air fryers do it too, just in a small volume.

Yeah pretty much, move the air and transfer more heat. Air fryers add in some radiation too often.

Forced vs. Free, bigger number means more energy transferred for the same temperature difference.

My oven is a lower temperature to the last. Cooking stuff wanting gas mark 7 needs 8. Either that my old over was over heating but this one since new was always undercooking stuff until we turned it up a notch. It will be the last Beko item i buy.

I reckon the manufacturers have dialled the heat output back a few notches so they fall into a better efficiency rating...

Dont know if this would effect gas pressure but where i live they council are hell bent on adding new housing estates what are all fine and well but no work seems to have been done on water and drainage. Tap pressure is now reduced and drainage is slow. There must be only one pipe into town what splits around the estates. That must take a toll i am sure. They are hell bent on adding supper fast broadband though

They'd have had to frig the thermostat too eg Regulo 4/Gas Mark 4 should still be a fixed temperature - just reached more slowly. If that's inaccurate across all new ovens I reckon you'd have heard about it.

My complaint about our oven from new was they've increased the insulation to make them more efficient but they still have to fit a standard cavity. Result? The ovens are smaller and my jolly super, new, quite expensive, French roasting 'tin' that I treated myself to when we got the new oven didn't fit. :( (I hacksawed part of the handle off the old one  ).

Yes, my old pizza stone and shovel simply won't fit inside the new oven and I've had to order new, smaller versions. But it's moot at the moment as I don't think the oven will get hot enough to do pizza properly anyway...

That's more a thing with the self cleaning ovens, they need loads of insulation.

It's also a thing with Neanderthal gas ovens, as I can testify. The tape measure (and the pizza stone) don't lie... :)

Well we must be seen to be looking after the environment don't you know.
Letters of complaint about ovens getting smaller belong in the pile about vacuums' not being powerful enough any more and should be addressed to the EU

On reflection I'm more :( that the pan manufacturer didn't start making slightly smaller ones than I am that the oven uses less electricity. (Or that they made them just fit to start with).
