Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
Just watching a new Beatles documentary on Disney+ , as you'd expect i'm quite partial to a bit of Beatles. But i think of them as being an inspirational talent back in the day, the same way with Queen, or Floyd, Stones etc...
Is it society that has changed ? Talent that's change ? or musical differences ?
We don't really see the screaming hoards of fans screaming now do we ?
Which is the 'latest' band that will have music that people will play regularly in 40 years time, 50 years time ?

Taylor Swift fills stadiums with screaming hoardes. Ed Sheeran too.
I think it's a combination of
Touring is too expensive for many bands unless they are huge
Spotify has splintered music, you can listen to anything so there's less tribalism and obsessing over one popular artist (probably died after Oasis)
Were getting too old to notice what's popular

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
(Popular) Music was, pretty much, a yoof thing and often tied into fashion etc. From skiffle to rock n' roll with the post-war fashions, through hippies, mods, glamrock (platform soles anyone? ) etc etc. It involved getting dressed up and going out. There were dance halls, discos, bands in pubs etc.
Every town had a venue where a group could pull in a decent sized audience and a record shop or two where you could leaf through stuff and spend your hard-earned.
People used to actually go out! Spend money on discs/tapes and play 'em until they wore out. Now it's all a bit virtual, stay home, stream and forget, follow the social media stampede and end up with.....Taylor Swift.
Society was a bit like plasticine, lots of different colours. Now it's all smeared together and gone grey, just like plasticine always ended up.
In 30 years time the pensioners on the bus back from the seaside will probably still be singing Beatles songs (one or two at the back that have had a beer or two might try a bit of 'Rolling in the Deep' or 'If you want it you should have put a ring on it' while the rest sing 'Penny Lane'.

That's not actually a bad thing in some respects. Things don't go in and out of fashion so now I can still find new shoegaze and probably same for whatever floats your boat

Multiple streams of music, no Radio 1 play list controlling music to the masses. A complete lack of idealism in Gen Z unless it is about their wellbeing / how awful/ boring their life is/ boomer hate.
But other than getting behind Greta ( until they get cold, or mum won’t give them a lift) there is nothing to get angry about. Esp when you are warm, fed and living with mum and dad at 27.
The result is very generic music, it says nothing because people will get offended about any political references. The Beatles were great - mainly because nothing had really been done that way before - so creative producers, influences, new technologies etc meant they, and the Byrds, Kinks, Stones, Doors, led Zep had a really big playing field.
It has now all been done - song writing is about you last relationship or being”brat”. Musicianship is disappearing because technology has taken over.
And Garage Band makes every think they can lay down choons

Anyone doing AI vocals yet? Everything else can be generated I expect vocals will be the last straw.
Not that I listen to popular music, I have DKFM or Spotify on in the car since Radio 6 went to shit prob 10 years ago

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
I suppose it's a bit like classical music. Everyone listens quite happily to the old stuff, just rerecorded umpteen times over. Production of work that'll stand the test of time tailed off dramatically. Lots of composers now just write for films and games.
The back catalogue will keep everyone going and, given the popularity of stuff like 70s radio, tribute bands and revival tours (and the fact that some of that seems popular with folk who weren't even born first time around) there's enough out there to keep everyone going. There'll be a few new bangin' tunes pop up but, for the most part, current big sellers will just fizzle out and be (thankfully ) forgotten.
There's still some recent good stuff out there but, in relative terms, it's 'niche'.

I'm just not sure how you access the new stuff - I really have no interest in Ariana Grande/ Taylor Swift / Rita Ora etcCount Steer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 11:19 am I suppose it's a bit like classical music. A lot of the "edgy" new bands - such as Fontaines DC and Kneecap are just a bit meh
My next door neighbour is an avid listener / buyer of vinyl - but even asking him, I am just not sure how you filter through the over marketed/ over hyped/ vapid mainstream offering.

Linkin Parks comeback track is great.
I was never really a fan back in the day, except for the re-animatiom mix of Points of Authority.

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
TBH I haven't picked up on much of it either but it's either been from spotting odd things on stuff like Jools Holland or wondering what a piece of music is on a film soundtrack and heading off down the Spotify rabbit hole and doing a bit of 'if you like this, you might like this' listening.Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 12:18 pm

(When the missus went off to Uni for a year she was looking forward to learning what all the younger students were listening to. All they were interested in was 'Wow! You saw Floyd live when they were doing stuff like Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother?! Cooooool!' ).

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
Auto-tune (which is effectively AI vocals) is rampant at all levels of music especially 'live' performance (which is often anything but). It appears that Taylor Swift was miming her way through her recent world-wide mega tour and bands like the Eagles have been caught out doing the same. Check out the Wings of Pegasus YT channel...

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
I've often heard the 90s was probably the end for chart topping bands. Now it seems to be more single artists and rappers? I'm struggling to think of a current ban other than Coldplay lol! But thats because I prefer music from the 70s - 90s and i can get it all on DAB so don't really do chart stuff anymore.

Rick Beato on YouTube did a video on this topic. Thought provoking.
He's also interviewed lots of brilliant musicians. Well worth watching and subscribing.

Not exactly latest band but like them or loth them i think Oasis and Muse would be played long after i have pegged it.
Foo Fighters is another that springs to mind.

Re: Bands, groups, music, inspirational, aspirational, what happened ?
Maybe not Oasis, but some form of Gallagher brother...probably.
I saw Muse at the national bowl last year, supported by 2 'proper bands': The Warning and Royal Blood. I still think of the latter as a new band, but they've been going 10 years
It's super weird, there are loads of 9 year old whizz kids on Insta now playing guitar like they're possessed by the ghost of Hendrix, yet noone seems to be able to actually put a tune together. Writing and playing are two very different things I guess.

Yep, compared to LP of old I thought it rather dull and restrained, a pale imitation.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 6:46 amThe emptiness machine?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 11:08 pmI used to be a fan back in the day, just checked out the new one as I wasn't aware of it, it sucks so bad.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 12:20 pm Linkin Parks comeback track is great.

But then I'm so out of touch with their stuff I didn't even know the original lead had killed himself.
