Recommend a Bluetooth speaker - old Bose speaker to phone 😡

The system/app for Bose doesn't seem to want to update the speaker to enable me to use it

Any recommendations for something similar to this -



Ok, I'm being impatient but I have a bad feeling about this 'updating' that's going on, so think I might need to plan for the future!!

I originally wanted the Bose that also had a radio and CD player but didn't want to spend too much money. Now that is what I really want but they don't seem to sell them any more

So, recommendations for a decent not to big (ideally Bose cos I love the sound!) bluetooth speaker for music at home (doesn't need to be portable charged and taken outside!!)

I have an old Bose speaker (about 9 years old - think it’s a SoundTouch but I’ll check) that I usually could join with my old iPhone (for music stuffs

I have to replace the really old iPhone (8) for a just old iPhone (11) and it doesn’t ‘see’ the Bluetooth from the Bose

Why would this be?
Surely Bluetooth is Bluetooth?

I’m a bit gutted as I love the sound of the speaker and I don’t have another to play through (currently can’t go buy a nice one to replace it and really don’t want to just buy a cheap shit one )

You need to 'pair' the speaker to the phone.

You'll have done this once with the old phone when you first got it.

There's probably a button on the speaker to make it 'discoverable'.

Thank you. Think I'm in the process!! Now says it'll take 20 minutes to update the speaker!! LOL Oh well - here's hoping it'll work on an old version

FFS - so it's updated and connected on wifi but it doesn't seem to allow me to play music from my phone on the wifi and still doesn't see it on bluetooth

OK, I apologise to Bose and iPhone!!

I'd turned on the old phone to try and work out what I did on that. So the speaker wouldn't see my newold phone cos it had connected to the old one

FFS, I'm such a muppet!!


BUT - still interested in recommendations if they have a built in CD player!! LOL (I have LOADS of CDs and never use them )

Press the bluetooth button on the speaker until the light flashes blue. You should then be able to pair it to your phone.

It's working, once I switched of the bluetooth on the old phone I is a muppet

I have loads of CDs too, they're all in the loft!
I signed my life away to Spotify because in the end the convenience outweighs the cost. It took me a fair while to get over listening to everything 'as an album', like us old folks are used to, but I'm over it now.

We also have one of those Bose speakers. When we got it it came with loads of really pointless software so in the end we just ignored it and connected to it like any other WiFi device.

I fully realise that this is a bit of a niche product recommendation as I bought this cos I already had a saw that used the batteries but...

I have a Festool BR10 DAB + which does err DAB + bluetooth from a phone, FM radio, aux in and even charges my phone while its doing it.

Wasnt cheap at £168 (minus the charger and batteries I already had) but thats about the price of most other site radios with the same features and they're usually waaaay bigger.
Carrying the usual ones onto a site and when they see a hulking great site radio they ban em cos they're too loud. With mine they see its small and don't stress.
It can go pretty loud (although I'm not gormless enough to kick the arse out of the situation) but my point is that its got decent sound, good reception and all in a small package.
Oh and it also runs off mains power although I think Ive only done that once, most sites I'm on are proper sites with 110 power, not peoples houses with 240 where I have to dick about being diplomatic with the general public and move their furniture to make space to work.

Thing is I’m going to have to go through them all to find them on Spotify, so might as well keep them out (when I’ve moved!!).

Other option is to put them all on a ‘thing’ and be able to play them from it. Like a jukebox but digital juleboxes are madly expensive!! I’m sure there’s an easier/better way!!

As for the speaker - I think I’ve only ever used it for Bluetooth connecting . I might have used radio in the uk, but last time I tried with the app, my phone was too old . Might see if I can find a station I like. Maybe!!

That looks interesting. I’ll have to find somewhere I can listen to one - I’m not a purist or anything but I do love the sound of the Bose. A lot of stuff I like is 50’s and it suits that

The Festool one makes a LOT more sense if you already have the batteries, I had them for my cordless ripsaw which urinates over almost everry saw on the market (apart from an even more expensive Mafell) from a great height.
Nothing that Makita/De-Walt/Hikoki/Milwaukee/whatever makes even comes close.
The speaker, DAB + radio yada yada is nice but the only thing that sets it aside from the rest of the tool manufacturers radios is its size.

This is one of those threads that starts small and widens out! Firstly on the bluetooth speaker issue. If you want a low cost solution then try the Creative Pebble stereo speakers. These sound surprisingly good for their size and price. They have the advantage that they have both Bluetooth and USB inputs so will work with almost any computer or phone etc. These speakers are not battery operated but I often use a generic power pack to provide USB power and this lasts for many days.

If you want to go up the price range then JBL make a range of players starting with small mono ones and going up to what might be called "boom boxes." Finally there are the very expensive ones which are mostly mains powered.

Regarding your CDs. I have converted my favourites to wav files using foobar2000 ( free ) software. FB2K will not only convert the tracks but will also get the metadata from web sources so that each track has artist and album details, track numbers etc. If you don't have a computer or laptop with a CD then an external USB CD player can be had for around £20 on Ebay. Once you have a collection of wav files you can play them via almost any device including in most cars.

I've got a first gen Sonos Move.

It's switchable between Wifi (for using the Sonos app, internet radio and doing multiroom stuff) and Bluetooth.

I use the Bluetooth with my Sony record player.

The Move (and the new Move 2) aren't cheap, but the sound quality was considerably better than the Bose stuff I was looking at (imho).

Sonos do a smaller portable speaker, the Roam SL, which I've never tried, but should be great if it's half as good as the Move.

It's Black Friday soon, so I'd expect some half decent pricing on whatever you choose if you can wait a week.

Thanx loads. I doubt I'll be buying a bluetooth speaker for a bit (till I move!) but I do need to start looking around. Downside is that I might need a couple and the ability to connect them (when/if I move I'll have a kitchen, sitting room and bedroom - need the music everywhere )

CDs - brilliant. thank you. Again, I suspect I won't do that till I move (need space to put the CDs out and 'copy' them!!).

I'd love a set up that means I could have a 'master' tablet/thing with everything on it and then just pick from that 'screen' to share to the speakers. Probably more of a challenge, but I'm not remotely techy.

I might start another thread actually as this is probably a fairly big subject on it's own!
