How much developed nations owe developing countries for global warming?
With 2024 on track to be the hottest year ever, this week countries around the world will gather for COP29 in Azerbaijan.
One of the main topics of discussion will be climate finance - how much developed nations owe developing countries to help them adapt to the effects of global warming.
Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, rich countries are bound to provide finance to developing countries to help them cut emissions and cope with the effects of climate change.
The current goal is to provide $100 billion (£77 billion) a year although it is widely agreed that this is not enough.

One of the countries in need of this support is Zambia. It is suffering its worst drought in 40 years and 50% of this year’s crops have been lost.
"We are at the frontlines of receiving the adverse impacts of climate change,” says Gabriel Pollen, the national coordinator for the country’s disaster management and mitigation unit.
“We need to transition from merely talking to dealing with the actual realities on the ground – supporting developing countries to build resilience in the face of climate change.”
Zambia produces as many emissions in a year as the UK does in ten days, and the US produces in just 15 hours.
It is also a leader in green energy – it provides 83% of its power through hydropower. Its biggest dam at Lake Kariba was completed in 1960.
But the drought means the reservoir and the river systems which feed it are drying up.

What caused the even worse drought? Was global cooling the fashionable excuse 40 years ago? Or what?MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 8:41 am...

Lake Kariba was built and funded by the UK, does that mitigate some of the responsibilities? Zambia was Northern Rhodesia back then, one of our colonies.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 8:41 am

A couple of years ago Zimbabwe replaced the original British GE generators, which were working well, with Chinese replacements that are far less efficient in terms of power generated per cubic meter of water, I suspect some government official got a lovely kick back from the Chinese supplier.

Not sure China and India are developed countries but are good polluters.

Kariba was funded by the World Bank in Africa. It was designed by a Frenchman and constructed by an Italian company.

Of course the privileged old white men don't want to pay for the environmental damage they've caused and benefitted from. Just like they don't want to pay reparations.
But pay they will.

You'd better be quick about it, otherwise you'll be included in those "privileged old white men" and you'll have to pay out of your pension.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 5:31 pm Of course the privileged old white men don't want to pay for the environmental damage they've caused and benefitted from. The privileged old white men who benefited from stuff are dead. Their debts, if they had any, died with them.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 5:31 pm Of course the privileged old white men don't want to pay for the environmental damage they've caused and benefitted from. By all means research my family history, if you find a fortune byily on slavery you can give it back to the victims. Good luck with the search!

I think I saw a bit of this speech earlier, it was someone at cop29 on the news anyway.
It started ok saying developed countries would need to pay more, then got a bit suspicious saying it wasn't charity and then got ridiculous saying the only way to do this was changing the whole world finance system.
They care about climate change about as much as the green party, i.e. only when it involves redistributing the wealth.

Re: How much developed nations owe developing countries for global warming?
Please detail the science supporting claims that human CO2 emissions are the cause of global warming. And yes I do mean the actual underlying science, not merely some random statement from some random COP29 bloke repeating some other random blokes claim.
Thanks.

The Maldives were so paniced by thought of sinking in to the briney sea that they expanded their airport. Seems like a reasonable response to an impending catastrophe.

'COP29, this year’s UN Climate Conference, is labelled the “finance COP” because delegates are expected to sign off on a new funding target for developed countries to support developing countries in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and deal with the worsening impacts of climate change.'

That is a surprise, isn't. It's about a money grab - so greenwashing at it's worst.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 9:27 am 'COP29, this year’s UN Climate Conference, is labelled the “finance COP” because delegates are expected to sign off on a new funding target for developed countries to support developing countries in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and deal with the worsening impacts of climate change.'
We are definitely destroying the planet with the on-going greed of both the first and third world. Brazil destroying the Amazon rainforets is hardly something that the Dutch, Danes and Poles are resposible for.
Until China, India, Russia and the USA get involved we are fucked anyway
