Lebara vs Giff Gaff

Post by Mr Moofo »

Lebara seem to give more EU roaming data - but are both very similar?
Does anyone have real world experience?

When I was in Spain my phone, even though on 5G, had difficultly getting anything from the net on mobile data - is this because the parent network favours its own customers?

I had a Giff Gaff SIM card once, and it disrespected me. Never again.

Whereas Lebara is #1 in Tamil Nadu.

I use a Lebara SIM in my Huawei wireless hotspot in the French moneypit and they give me 100Gb data per month for €20 as opposed to the paltry 5Gb roaming data I get with Giffgaff (for £8). And I can buy the SIM at the local Tabac, less than five minutes walk away. Mine is a fairly niche user experience I grant you but for anyone not wanting to sign up for a monthly contract, but still needing realistic amounts of data in rural France, it's a God-send and a complete no-brainer.

The maximum monthly amount of data you'll get from UK providers with a UK SIM is 5Gb. That's basically a consequence of Brexit - pre-Brexit the allowance was 20GB. Lebara is a French networlk provider and they are competing against other French network providers in the marketplace and Brexit is an irrelevance to them, hence why their data offering is so much better value and more generous than UK providers.

ID is your friend if you're using it abroad.
Been 9+months for me abroad and still getting euro coverage. Either they've forgotten about me or they can't be arsed to charge for it!

No, haven't tried them and am unlikely to now, as the Lebara SIM gives me more than I need for not silly money. If I found a SIM that was noticeably cheaper for the same amount of data I'd probably switch, but to be honest 100Gb for 20 euro a month is fair enough.

Is that over all countries? (Well, uk, France and Switzerland) ? I get stung every winter for charges cos I'm in and out of Switzerland. Would be handy to find something reasonable that I don't have to change numbers for the UK and get stung in Switzerland!!

I use the Lebara SIM in a Huawei mobile hotspot (Access Point) in France as it gives me way more data than my UK giffgaff SIM does. The Huawei is plugged into my PC in france and it allows me to effectively have PAYG Internet access rather than having a contract and paying for the 8 months of the year I'm not at the house in France. I'm not using it as a phone SIM, I'm just using it for the data.

I have no idea how it would work as a phone SIM and using it 'abroad' (i.e. not in France). Lebara's French website should have more info.
