I was laughing and did say thank you to him, but - he really is a patronising sexist fuckwit !!! I'd understand more if he was old, but he's in his early 30's !! Obviously just thinks I'm really really stoooopid!!!

Dealers have always hated cash buyers as the dealer gets a % of the interest as a commission for selling the finance agreement. Back when I was selling cars people always used to ask how much for cash and were miffed when we said it should be more as there's less profit for us! It wasn't quite as blatant as that but we'd tried to explain why we didn't discount for cash.

Today, buying vehicles is like buying houses, you need to be qualified to show you are actually capable of buying it, rather than waste the dealers time with dreamers and tyre kickers etc. That said, I don't know why a simple phone enquiry about the car can't be dealt with, unless it's a large retailer with hundreds of cars in stock, as they just aren't going to be that granular about an individual cars condition and will just refer you to their vehicle preparation and multiple check points before delivery policy.

It is all based on Contract Law. The notices must be clearly visible so if you didn't see them they weren't visible enough so no contract.
You can appeal, but that is mostly cosmetic, most of them fail.
The almost foolproof get out is to offer them 'reasonsble' recompense, say £5 or'£10. They will refuse and send dozens of letters. Ignore them all until they send one from their tame solicitor threatening to take you to court. Reply to that telling them you will dispute their bill (by now it will be several £00) and see them in court. They will bluster and threaten but are unlikely to issue court paperwork. If they do it will be somewhere near them, use the court processes to transfer it to somewhere near you. 99+% they will not turn up and you win by default. If by chance they do, explain to the judge you didn't see the notice. 90% chance he will throw the case out. Worst case if you lose you will have to pay £100. Legal costs CANNOT be recovered in the Small Claims track of the County Court.
