Tyre fitters / repair places

Had a nail bang in the middle of the tread on a tyre with about 5mm tread - scruffy fella sucks through his teeth and says I need a new tyre as only has a few thousand miles left in it. I tell him to jog-on and just repair it, chancer.....

In Tesco express yesterday. One manned till open and the person in front of me has a full basket. The self service tills were open. I scan my goods, I see the screen which is taking a video of my face. But I need store authorization to buy an energy drink.
I waited until the person before me in the queue had been served. And the person after that and the person after that.

If their stupid cameras can't tell that the guy with a full beard and crows feet isn't 12 years old. They the items stay at the till and I leave.

The brat doing the tills actually asked me for ID, I was going to strangle him.

They actually stopped me from buying a bottle of Morgan's because I had my daughter with me, they demanded to see ID from her in case it was a proxy sale or some shit. She didn't have any ID because what 14 year old has ID. She was about 5'10 back then and they didn't believe she was 14. I hope they had fun putting the 200 quids worth of shopping back on the shelves when I walked away.

I've actually seen an older chap and a young girl testing (more like officially inciting) a local shop to see if they'd sell her lottery tickets. To his credit, the guy behind the counter didn't fall for it, just said 'no' and didn't ask for age or ID, just 'no' and the older chap then gave him a congratulatory spiel.

Then they left disappointedly to try their luck at another place. It may be that these smaller shops network to warn each other so the shop was on alert.

They may do the same thing with booze/cigs/vapes etc so shops are probably hyper-cautious.

When I worked at a Supermarket I used to volunteer for the putting stuff back role, 'cause it was more interesting* than sitting on a till staring at the wall. So maybe these protests aren't the protests you think they are.

Wait what?? So when a parent does the weekly shop with their kids in tow, they risk being told they can't buy alcohol ???

Companies House and the new requirement for all company directors to verify their ID. I have spent the best part of 2 hours struggling with their cumbersome system and the app. Eventually succeeded but is a total PITA.

I foresee their computer system crashing when ALL the directors of ALL the companies in the UK have to go through this by the autumn.

I know it works that way in the states, can't say I've ever had it happen to me here though, and I do buy alcohol most times I go in a shop, thinking about it aside from one time with Amazon I don't think I've ever been 'carded' in my life.

Some places in the US ask for ID per drink, but that's only happened to me a couple of times and in very touristy places.

Good excuse for not getting 'em in.

I had a similar experience with Amex recently. Government rules appear to necessitate convincing them that I'm still British. 'Take a photo of your passport (or residency permit but not driving licence) and upload it'. Ah...their upload routine doesn't work from a mobile phone.

Move onto laptop. Upload link has time-expired.

To be fair they were, as ever, excellent in their support over the phone. No wait, no rush.

This was another one of theirs:

A Thatcham store has been ordered to pay fines and costs in the region of £30,000 for dangerous storage of fireworks.

Manmohan Nagpal, and his company JMG Stores Ltd had entered guilty pleas to four Health and Safety offences.

During the fireworks season in 2022, trading standards officers visited the convenience store Today’s Local, in Crown Mead, Thatcham to carry out a routine check of the storage of fireworks.

The officers found that fireworks were being stored dangerously with live electricity and flammable items.

They also found rockets and other explosive fireworks which were not allowed to be stored at the premises, and the explosive content was more than double that which was allowed under the licence.

The court heard that trading standards officers had provided advice on prior occasions which had not been acted on by the owner.

The business owner and his company were sentenced to pay total fines and costs amounting to £29,313.

Well, if/when you get the email (from my own bruising experience)....

a) make sure you know how to log into your account*
b) have a photo of the relevant page of your (up-to-date**) passport on your PC/laptop
c) make sure your PC/laptop has done all the Windows and whatever updates***.

* I haven't ever logged into mine since I first set it up
** Discovered mine had lapsed when I finally found it
*** Fired up my laptop, which I haven't used for 6+ months, whereupon it went off on a 30 minute update frenzy

Front axle just snapped on my makita lawn mower and oen wheel came off. Got a garden full of people tomorrow so had to push it regardless. Found myself singing 3 wheels on my wagon...
