For the sake of probate the old mans estate had to be valued, this valuation then goes via the tax office to make sure no inheritance tax is due, all good we're (my sister and I) are about €700k short of having to pay. Probate comes through and we sell the house. Because the house sold for more than the probate valuation we've had to pay capital gains tax on the diference. €8000. Tossers. I'll let the estate agent that did the valuation know.

Given I know a little bit about IHT and CGT we went with the highest valuation on the property for probate, safe in the knowledge that there was no IHT to pay and that we’d be very lucky to get that on the open market, the house sold around the average of the three local estate agent valuations we got.

Professionally, I once had an estate investigated by HMRC, they took months and then declared they were happy with the return we’d submitted on behalf of the estate. The client died shortly after the start of the banking crisis so investment values were low and by the time probate was granted, there was over £100k gain on his estate which we washed out using the estate and beneficiaries CGT allowances across two tax years. Not as easy with today’s CGT allowance…

FWIW just been through the process (UK) with my mother's place.

Three estate agents gave us two prices, all unprompted, lower for probate and higher for open market.

Suggestion (my wording) was that the lower price is a 'have to sell' price but the market price might need haggling / waiting, etc.

Also FWIW, probate came through in two weeks!

My suspicion is estate agents think they are doing the executors a favour by low balling the probate value as they believe it’ll save IHT but in reality, they are building in a capital gain. Probate value should be market value in any case. The major part of the investigation on my client’s estate above was down to the property values, thankfully the HMRC valuer agreed, eventually, that the values we’d submitted were accurate.

Granted, if my Dad’s estate had been subject to IHT, I’d have happily paid 28% CGT after using various allowances than paid 40% on the same amount with no further allowances.

I spoke to a UK client this afternoon, she’s been quoted 12 weeks for probate but her husband’s estate should fall into the simplified estate process so it’ll hopefully be sooner for her.

I pay c. £80 a month to be a member of an independent gym near me. Virtually all class-based. I noticed a new class pop up for Tuesday evenings. Great, I think, I'll give 'Barbell Strength' a go next Tuesday.

Only to attend, I would need to do an induction. Which is a one-off fee of £20.

I'm not being tight, it's the principle. I'm a paying member. Why should I then have to pay £20 to attend a class? I get that barbells and posture go hand-in-hand, but I've been gymming and lifting weights most of my adult life. Any instructor should be able to manage a small class, picking up poor posture, etc. as part and parcel of running the class.

Am I being a grouch?

My grandson's birthday was 2nd June (Monday). We were away from home on a short break the week before so I posted his card and a small present from Cornwall. I had intended to send him a cheque as well (he's 17 with his own bank account, it's about time to find out about antiquated technology ) but I left my cheque book at home. On the Monday, his birthday, I sent the cheque. Both were sent first class, I expected that the card would probably arrive on the Saturday, possibly the Monday. The cheque should have arrived on the Tuesday. They both arrived on the Wednesday.

Which means I paid Royal Mail for two first class deliveries and received one second class and one, the "large letter" I paid £3.60 for, even worse than second class. When did our postal service become so bad?

For the first time ever in a supermarket I left a full trolley at the till and walked out. Several weeks ago Tesco refused to sell me something on the shelf saying there was an emergency product withdrawal, today I had the same problem with the same product and they couldn't explain why it was still an emergency.

My sister lives in East Dulwich in London. In 2018 Royal Mail closed the local sorting office and moved everything somewhere else, since then she gets post once a fortnight if the Postman is in a good mood. It is literally no post for weeks then everything delivered at the same time.

Well, start with the Postal Services Act 2000, chuck in Vince Cable's 2013 launching of it on the Stock Market and end with the flogging off to some foreign investor. Include everything between 2000 and 2025 and its demise is pretty much covered.

This job, which I've already whinged about. There's only 2 weeks left, but considering I'm basically caring for someone who needs it. I hate myself for counting down the days.

In Tesco express yesterday. One manned till open and the person in front of me has a full basket. The self service tills were open. I scan my goods, I see the screen which is taking a video of my face. But I need store authorization to buy an energy drink.
I waited until the person before me in the queue had been served. And the person after that and the person after that.

If their stupid cameras can't tell that the guy with a full beard and crows feet isn't 12 years old. They the items stay at the till and I leave.
