Re: In todays news...
Just seen that USA has just sent a rocket up to send probe/thingy to the moon. Cool. It will take about 7 weeks to get there.
That got me thinking. Apollo 11 managed to get there and back in just 8 days over 50 years ago.
Why does this new one take so long?
Quick maths show the new one will be only travelling at about 210 mph.

Re: In todays news...
The probe is taking a roundabout loopy sort of way to get there. It orbits both the earth and the moon several times before it gets into its final location. Apollo went 'straight there'.
The former of the two methods take less energy (hence, smaller rocket) due to the weirdness of Orbital mechanics. I imagine they're also interested in the side benefit of being in orbit at various heights around the moon, so they can measure radiation and things like that. So while it's average speed for the journey to the moon might only be 200ish mph, it's doing faasahnds of mph but also travelling millions of miles.
Downside is it takes bloody ages, which isn't a factor with a robot but of course matters somewhat more with people.

The huge rocket to launch it must have cost a bob or two.MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:27 amWild stab in the dark, because it can / has no need to go fast, fuel ain't cheap you know and the moon isn't going anywhere.

To land a 90kg probe on the moon Nearly a million quid per kilo.
Still, s'alot cheaper than Apollo was!

I'm disappointed the police continue to take such flimsy cases to court, they need to be reined in and stop ruining people's lives over a politically motivated whim.

It might help if he could sue them for libel.

Err...'the trial continues'. Bit premature to start suing anyone.Mussels wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:36 pm I'm disappointed the police continue to take such flimsy cases to court, they need to be reined in and stop ruining people's lives over a politically motivated whim.

Don't the CPS decide what goes to court? What's 'political' about it?...the girl's father went to the police, they didn't ignore him. Suppose the court finds him guilty etc etc etc.

I missed the trial continues bit, my bad as I thought stories like this only come out afterwards.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 5:52 pmErr...'the trial continues'. Political because the police and CPS are only interested in increasing numbers, they don't seem to care how.
CPS wrote:We want to make significant year-on-year increases in the number of rape cases we bring to court so that more victims, irrespective of background and circumstances, see justice done. We know we cannot do this alone, and our work needs to support and complement that of our partners, particularly in policing.

Yeah, the idea of quotas/targets is a bit disturbing. Whatever happened to 'every case on its merits'?Mussels wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 8:18 pm I missed the trial continues bit, my bad as I thought stories like this only come out afterwards.

Must admit though, if they said it about burglaries/car and bike theft I'd probably cheer....then maybe think about it a bit more. But those don't fall in their lap like the case above.

Another airline [United Airlines] finds problems with doors - days after plane's mid-air blowout
Industry publication Air Current reported that United found loose bolts on other parts on at least five panels that were being inspected following the accident over the weekend.
"Since we began preliminary inspections on Saturday, we have found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug - for example, bolts that needed additional tightening," United said in a statement.

So, some mention of Epstein making tapes of the people on his island, no surprises there cos I always assummed he was a blackmailer.
