On the later engines the back plate of the cover has a hole you can screw a bolt into to lock the cams, which makes it even easier.
It a lot more complicated on the twin cam engines, you also need a guitar tuner to tension the belts

I bought a little guitar tuner device for about a fiver from Chiner just so I could change/tension the belts on the Ducati.
Haven't used it yet, mind...

Slow bikes were a lot of fun, I think we lost something along the way 
although it would be a challenging ride given the speed of modern cars.
