His classic response to this question, and notwithstanding the wads of notes we sometimes find in drawers, is that he likes to keep enough money 'in case the roof needs doing'. Why this scenario causes so much angst I have no idea. Barring a substantial storm, the roof is going nowhere, and even in the event of the storm of the century, he has buildings insurance.

Must be an age thing.

YOu've also got the fact the roofer isn't going to rock up tomorrow and say "roof needs doing, i need £15k now or it's not happening"

How old is he? I'm 76 next week, I usually keep £200 in my current account and the rest goes into a savings account.

If he's a similar age, it's not an ageing thing. Some of you youngsters think anybody more than 10 years older than you is a doddery old fool.

Yep, my FiL was the same. Also had multiple different savings accounts all with different small/medium amounts in.

I'm still not sure we actually found it all when we executed his will.

He took £500 cash with him when he had to be admitted to hospital for a few days.
