I always assumed Ray Winstone's character in Sexy Beast was based on Tiepin.

Have you been watching Kaos on Netflix? (Worth a watch - no pun intended)

I keep toying with the idea of modding a Seiko (possibly using a NH35 movement) and a titanium case (I'm just not impressed by heavy watches with metal bracelets) and maybe a dive watch style just cos I like a clear face (pilots watch being another option.

I'm not dead set on the Seiko movement as theres an ETA one with pretty common parts avaliable but its the frontrunner just for the choices it gives.
Titanium case being 60-90 quid, a face and hands being cheap enough as I really couldn't give a flying fuck about non standard parts other than the movement.

To be fair, I'm actually quite happy with my Casio MDV-106 since I got rid of the original scratched and broken mineral glass and put a "Sapphire"* glass in. Thats been in the watch for well over a year of proper scratchy site work and theres not a single scratch on it despite the rest of the watch being as scabbled as feck.
I would say that if anyone bas a mineral glass on their watch that a genuine upgrade is a sapphire glass. Think mine was only 20 quid and wasnt even that hard to fit either once I bought a cheapo press.

In terms of accuracy a mechanical movement is a definite downgrade compared to a quartz movement but I quite like tinkering so I might give it a bash.

*Synthetic sapphire but its basically the same stuff as a ruby as well but sapphire sounds posher innit, dunno why, its a real corundum to me

My daily wear is a Seiko Kinetic with a titanium case. It is scratched to hell, titanium is tough but it doesn't seem very scratch resistant.

Common misconception...if you want something strong and tough get steel, it trumps titanium is almost every regard that way.

Titanium is light. And very hypoallergenic, which is good in the context of jewellery.

Aye, not fussed about the case being scabbled a bit, it's more that the ones with a stainless case kind of turn themselves around on my wrist due to the case weight.
Never been blown away by that "Reassuring weight" bullshite.
Plus I already have a Lorus (Loris? Can't remember) with a Ti case and I value a sapphire crystal waaaaaaay above the supposed increased scratch resistance of stainless steel over Ti. Case scratch? DGAF, but a scratch on the crystal really gets on my fucking nerves and I would in general recommend that anyone with the chance spend the 20 or so off Ebay quid and replace their mineral glass with a far and away more scratch resistant sapphire (its actually Corundum which is also Ruby and Ihad some in my mineral specimen cabinet when I was a kid) crystal. It genuinely urinates over "Mineral Glass" from a great height, although to be fair I've not depth tested it. Fuckload more scratch resistant though, for sure.

I've worked metal (before becoming a woodbutcher) for long enough that in general I have a fairly good idea of their properties

It still amuses me that people value ruby and sapphire when you can cook it up in a factory. :D

In the science museum they've got a (mam made) phone book sized lump of "sapphire" which is part of a lens. The only thing which makes it blue or red is a little bit of impurity.

P.S. try having an Omega watch with a plastic 'glass' :D

Aye, that "Sapphire" crystal I pressed onto my Casio cost a grand total of 20 quid for something 30 something mm in diameter and 2.7 mm thick.

The watch itself is scabbled to feck, thats fine by me and reflects the fact that I wear it everyday and my work isn't gentle on watches.
The crystal however is just as perfect as the day I pressed it in as far as I can see.
The original mineral crystal was scratched with a week and not long after that it cracked while I was lifting a large timber frame and the watch face was against the frame on the inner of my wrist.
I'm not suggesting that the sapphire crystal wouldn't have cracked lifting that frame, I honestly don't know but it's much much better material for my usage.

For actually diving? Dunno, deepest I'm going is a few feet when swimming in Ullswater.
Placky crystal may well be better for proper depths, I just don't care about that.

I bought a Picto watch yesterday after seeing them last week in Copenhagen. I was gonna buy one there and then but changed my mind at the last minute.

Those prices are in Danish Krone BTW ;)

IMO most smartwatches look bloody orrible but I genuinely like the look of that, decent clear err watchy type stuff and a few subdials for the rest.
I assume there's other choices for its 'look' but thats a nice one. Looks a bit like it would be in an aeroplane cockpit.
