Compare what it's like to back off the throttle completely in gear, and then do the same out of gear. When in gear you slow down quite rapidly, as the engine is acting as a brake. When in neutral (i.e. out of gear) the engine is removed from the equation and you freewheel for way further than if you were in gear. So it is the engine and whether it is in circuit or not that makes the difference, not some notional wheel 'reverse force'.

You misunderstand what I'm saying with the factor 5. Most cars have 4 or 5 stuf hubs, done up to 100Nm. Replacing that with a single nut means you need very roughly five times the torque for the same clamp force. "Roughly" cause the size of the thread comes into it to.

The only time the drive shafts are in reverse motion is when reverse gear is selected. That is why drive shafts have to work both ways.

Yes and no.

"No" because five bolts is five bolts right?

"Yes" because in practical terms those bolts/studs are mounted in a 'real' component that doesn't obey they idealised laws of calculations. The wheels and hub distort as you bolt them up, so the spacing of the bolts effects the clamping load achieved. That's also part of the reason you're advised to tighten in stages, the distortion of the bits would potentially effect how much of your tightening torque is turned into useful clamp.

Bigger PCDs generally come with bigger wheels and bigger hubs. Hubs might be bigger cause they have bigger bearings etc. for higher forces, but they also allow you to transmit more torque for the same clamp load (and hence bolt torque). But they also tend to be heavier....which is one of the reasons you would then go for a centrelock wheel. Which in turn forces you to have a really high tightening torque.

Where as I dawdle, enjoying the full supermarket experience, she's in, shopped, done, trolley full, reduced items selected, 2-for-1 offers either taken up or ignored with razor-sharp mental arithmetic and menus changed on the hoof, The exfil at the till is brutal, with the poor cashier struggling to keep up. Once finished, coupons, staff discount cards, etc are presented and we're out, me following behind, staggering like a recently-freed hostage choking on a flash-bang.

I'm not a sucker for deals - it's only a bargain if you wanted it in the first place.

Supermarkets now give a price per weight on the shelf label, which is great for finding a good deal however, they'll give the price per gram for one coffee and the price per kilogram for the next. It's ok, I can do the maths, but if they were actually trying to help, they'd stick with one unit of weight. It gets really complicated when there is a deal on, like buy one get one half price because then you're left wondering if the price per kilo is the deal price or the original price More maths.

I used to hate shopping but it has become the only thing I do that could be called leisure during lockdown, the hours I've spent wandering around Sainsburys with an empty basket, studying labels
