'Acting as a brake' to the force transmitted from the wheel...mangocrazy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 10:34 pm Compare what it's like to back off the throttle completely in gear, and then do the same out of gear. When in gear you slow down quite rapidly, as the engine is acting as a brake. When in neutral (i.e. out of gear) the engine is removed from the equation and you freewheel for way further than if you were in gear. So it is the engine and whether it is in circuit or not that makes the difference, not some notional wheel 'reverse force'.

Doesn't the pcd of the studs have some relevance too?

Good heavens.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 10:25 pm The only time the drive shafts are in reverse motion is when reverse gear is selected. That is why drive shafts have to work both ways.
Engine braking when reversing must really confuse those poor shafts.

"No" because five bolts is five bolts right?
"Yes" because in practical terms those bolts/studs are mounted in a 'real' component that doesn't obey they idealised laws of calculations. The wheels and hub distort as you bolt them up, so the spacing of the bolts effects the clamping load achieved. That's also part of the reason you're advised to tighten in stages, the distortion of the bits would potentially effect how much of your tightening torque is turned into useful clamp.
Bigger PCDs generally come with bigger wheels and bigger hubs. Hubs might be bigger cause they have bigger bearings etc. for higher forces, but they also allow you to transmit more torque for the same clamp load (and hence bolt torque). But they also tend to be heavier....which is one of the reasons you would then go for a centrelock wheel. Which in turn forces you to have a really high tightening torque.

People who know better (Including the likes of Adam Savage, Colin Furze, Ethan from Grid hard plumbing and too many others) that say "half" when they mean "two"
' The hub broke in half"
Really? half? exactly half?..... is that half by weight, or by volume, or by mass or do you actually mean
" The hub broke in two "

Shouldn't it be "... into two"?Jody wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 8:30 am People who know better (Including the likes of Adam Savage, Colin Furze, Ethan from Grid hard plumbing and too many others) that say "half" when they mean "two"

They both work, they both convey what I mean with an adequate amount of accuracy. You're getting upset over nothing*.

Shit "deals" in stores...
The dog food we use is £59.99 a bag... or... the deal of "£135 for two bags". When you select two, you get automatically given the "deal" price. Now anyone that knows me, knows I ain't no maths genius (slightly odd see the job I do, but we digress), I can however add up 59.99 + 59.99 and it sure as shit is less than 135!!

I like the ones that suddenly present you with the bargain 'Buy two for £4!' when the individual price is, say £2.20 each. Fair play, you might say, but then you think back and realise they were only £1.79 each last week and that this is the supermarket equivalent of pointing up into the empty sky and shouting 'Look! An eagle!!' before running off...

I'm more concerned that despite their poor use of the Engrish longwidge they're living the dream - I'd kill to have half the skills they have. The Grind Hard boys must still be under 30 n'all.

I also check the price per kilo on the 'fantastic' offers. Also with bigger packs - everyone is so used to larger packs being cheaper per slice/kg than smaller ones that it's automatic to reach for a bigger pack - but definitely worth checking

Mrs. Gremlin is the shopping equivalent of a special forces raid. First, menus are meticulously planned for the week ahead and cupboards, fridges and freezers are checked for existing supplies. The list is drawn up, with the week's menus at the bottom. Discount cards are obtained from supermarket-employed siblings and then we get the 'Go! Go! Go!'. Where as I dawdle, enjoying the full supermarket experience, she's in, shopped, done, trolley full, reduced items selected, 2-for-1 offers either taken up or ignored with razor-sharp mental arithmetic and menus changed on the hoof, The exfil at the till is brutal, with the poor cashier struggling to keep up. Once finished, coupons, staff discount cards, etc are presented and we're out, me following behind, staggering like a recently-freed hostage choking on a flash-bang.

Every time my missus goes in to a certain boulangerie and is offered the 'meal deal' she points out that their deal costs more than the individual items (in most cases, certainly the ones I want) priced separately.Wreckless Rat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 9:32 am Shit "deals" in stores...

They all think she's mad.
I've always been hugely irritated by folk not being able to add up - or at least being so bad at guesstimating that you can throw any old figure at them.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I'm not a sucker for deals - it's only a bargain if you wanted it in the first place.
Supermarkets now give a price per weight on the shelf label, which is great for finding a good deal however, they'll give the price per gram for one coffee and the price per kilogram for the next. It's ok, I can do the maths, but if they were actually trying to help, they'd stick with one unit of weight. It gets really complicated when there is a deal on, like buy one get one half price because then you're left wondering if the price per kilo is the deal price or the original price More maths.
I used to hate shopping but it has become the only thing I do that could be called leisure during lockdown, the hours I've spent wandering around Sainsburys with an empty basket, studying labels
