I bought a Paul Costello Wool Overcoat last weekend.

I've no idea if Paul Costello is good or bad, but I liked it.

I had this conversation with my 17 year-old daughter. She buys lots of cheap, disposable fashion. I tend to buy a few good items of clothing each year, that aren't going to look 'so last season' within 20 minutes of getting home.

I claimed more woke points for that one.

WTF is a woke point ? and how do you gain or lose them in this scenario ?

I have very similar thoughts!

I baulk at spending money on bike stuff alot of the time, but I will spend 4 figures on a coat. People might think its mad, but I wear it every day and its lovely. A fancy new exhaust would cost a similar amount, but I'm not lining up on the grid at Silverstone so by any logical argument it would be pointless.

Its the same with food. People think I'm nuts for buying £50 cakes buy they'll think nothing of a hundred quid nihjt out where you almost literally piss your money up the wall

Think Nectar Points for for self-righteous, self-important, pious, patronising wankers and you won't be far wrong.

You can gain them by, among other things:

-Refusing to buy anything that isn't ethical/organic/free range/artisan/overpriced and in in a wicker box.
-Driving an electric vehicle.
-Reading 'Dear White Person' on public transport (double points for reading pretentious shite and being on public transport, even though you're
quietly shitting yourself as the tube is full of ruffian-types)
-Attending an Extinction Rebellion/BLM/Momentum gathering.
-Using terms such as 'Greenwashing'.
-Buying clothes from charity and telling absolutely everyone about it using the term 'Upcycling' endlessly.
-Being vegan (we'll take as read you'll tell everyone at every fucking opprtunity)


These points can be redeemed at any middle-class dinner party or student bar.

John Smedley's do a rather nice pully in 50% recycled cashmere/50% merino wool for £295. I can't decide if recycling cashmere is a mighty fine idea or fashion greenwashing. I'll give 'em a bonus point for not putting a logo on it though. May have a look in the factory shop next time I'm in Matlock though.

Not a purchase per se. I was at a Tradeshow yesterday talking to some guys from Toray, one of the big players in carbon fibre and other 'technical fibre' manufacture. They gave me one of their "Toraysee" glasses/lens cloths in the classic promo packaging sort of thing.

It's a microfibre cleaning cloth with fibres that are even more micro than usual, apparently. 2 microns rather than 15 I'll 'ave you know. Anyway, they're about a tenner each to buy and even I, a man who likes a nice thing, wouldn't pay that for a small cleaning cloth

But you know what - having tried this thing, I just might in future I never woulda believed a cloth could have been so much better than another cloth! Genuinely considering getting a couple for visor duties.

If y'aint got a set of SDS bits for that, Screwfix have a clearance set of 17 for £14.97.

Not a recent buy but its one I bought a couple of years ago and never used.
An Iron Duke cold chisel, I've been cutting steel bolts with it for a good part of the day and beat the crap out of it. Just needed a slight tickle with a flap disc to touch its edge up. Its the best cold chisel I've ever used by a long way.

Got it secondhand and although I can't even remember how much it can't have been more than a couple of quid.

And grease the internals of the chuck / round end of the chisel to ensure the bit doesn’t get jammed. It is worth removing the chisel regularly to let it cool down in you’ve got a large area to do.
