I'm all over it. Love a bit of pomp and pageantry. I'll swear my allegiance too, fwiw!

Hertzberg and his factors are potentially worth a read with regards to this discussion (money, not monarchy)Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 10:37 amI guess Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is still relevant. One of the times I look back on fondly was a time I had least £ (after age 17). Student. I had food, beer, time, health etc a bed and a roof overhead- it all made up for the lack of funds. Start work, get more money, less time etc. The money only partly made up for the loss of the 'freedom/lack of responsibility/stimulation' etc. I think people can end up chasing money thinking they can buy those things back. It doesn't work!Saga Lout wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 10:09 amYes. you've got it.Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 7:58 am I may be wrong but I think that's exactly what SL is saying. People might moan about not having enough but they don't actually need more enough to bother trying to get it. Ergo, they clearly do have enough and more is not that important.
It's usually rich people with more than enough money who tell the poor that money isn't important. You know, those who say "It's better to be poor and happy than rich and unhappy". Which is true, but those aren't the only options. E.g. I'd rather be rich and happy than poor and unhappy.

I want nothing to do with it or them. They’re an anachronism of a history containing plenty not to celebrate and much behaviour that needs reparation. They’re symbolic of a huge disparity in wealth between people who have far more than they need and others who are struggling to survive. The idea of being enthusiastic over the coronation let alone swearing allegiance to such a system beggars belief.

Same here.
What surprised me was back in my backpacking days, people from other western countries would often ask me about them & would seem deflated when I said that I've no interest in any of them & think they're parasites.I got the impression people from other countries thought that we were all Royalists & we all celebrated everything royal

Much of what you say is true and at some level I agree with the sentiment but what do we replace our figurehead with? (don't say Biden). Who represent the exemplar for our cultural heritage? What is our cultural iconography? I don't think it is Christianity any more (sadly).dern wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 9:28 am I want nothing to do with it or them. The royal family make us a kingdom and I happen to like this country, pretty much above all others and considering the state of our nation, for no other reason than this. I am proud to be British. We have values and traditions that support our version of a civilised society.
Look at what is happening in America right now. They have no core values really apart from their constitution which they are busy ignoring. The entire nation is in cultural chaos. If they weren't so militarily massive their economy would have collapsed because their society is going to the dogs.***
Yes it is blatant patriotism. For King and country, stiff upper lip, our cultural identity is derived from such anachronisms but it gives us all** a sense of belonging. Pride in our nation. The cost is trivial (somebody can fact check that for me) in the grand scheme of things and imho, makes us better than all those bloody foreigners.
**(not you clearly)
***(The dollar is massively overvalued. America makes nothing except war. They give us meaningless/worthless bits of paper for which we hand over real tangible stuff. That won't last with the astronomic national debt they are digging themselves deeper into. $31 trillion national debt, a number so vast it is virtually meaningless. 31 trillion grains of sand would reach the moon and back - several times!

Re: Not My King / God save The King
I've gone from totally 'meh' to, maybe I could find someone to watch a bit of it with!! LOL I honestly couldn't sit through a whole day of it, but kinda want to watch the actual ceremony now. Might make some scones and cucumber sarnies to take down to a mate - I'm going anyway if the easy start spray arrives or not!! LOL He's totally not bothered, but said he'll watch a bit!
I remember the silver jubilee, despite being only 6! I mean, I don't remember loads, but I do remember some of the celebrations - we lived near a tiny village in the Somerset countryside. My bro was reminicing about the Charles & Di wedding when we chatted the other day - probably remembers that a lot as he slept on the pavement of the route with his aunt and cousin to be there for the procession!! On Saturday, he and said cousin have a table at a pub in Whitehall with a balcony, so, birds eye view!!
As I said earlier, I do count myself as a royalist, but had been very apathetic about all this till yesterday. Maybe it's cos I'm in a foreign country on my own!! Who knows!! LOL

Re: Not My King / God save The King
On holiday once, and a few drinks in, I was asked by some Americans if I had ever met the Queen. I told them that everybody gets invited to Palace garden parties to meet the Queen in person upon their 18th birthday.Bustaspoke wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 9:57 amSame here.

She was a great woman, I think Princess Anne inherited those same genes and is also a very smart woman. She'd make great Queen.
...and we get Charlie.
I think a young royal couple would have been much better for our country. Hey ho, it is what it is....

Potter wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 8:09 am Anyway, always happy to wind up the weak minded, but back on subject, we're looking forward to the weekend, the house will be festooned with bunting, the physical and digital invites went out weeks ago, the big projector will show the coronation on the patio, Mrs P arranged the caterers, she's even bought special chocolates to go in the gift bags with the royal crest on.
We've got friends and family coming from all over the place and some of the village neighbours will pop along.
The pub has a celebration on, and the social/sports club too, and the bowling green has a hog roast, I'm hoping it will rival the 1977 Jubilee celebrations.
I don't know what's not to like.
I stopped watching the news a year or more back as its so miserable and depressing. We need something good going on. A celebration. Something for the whole country to get behind. The Kings Coronation gives us that almost in the same way non football fans get behind their teams in the world cup. A break from the norm. Likewise, our bunting is up and I'll watch it all throughout the day and look forward to the concert too!

Re: Not My King / God save The King
I watched a coronation related programme last night! It was the smart chap from Sewing Bee looking at the making of all the military dress uniforms (including one for Seamus the regimental wolfhound). They even covered the making of the buttons.
It was really interesting. Recommended.

Baby D has been treating us to renditions of the coronation song in preparation for her special assembly today.

It should be a good day for a ride on the bike, if everyone is inside glued to the telly. Bit like a football world championship game evening, but hopefully no mad nutters racing it to the off-licence for more booze during halftime.

Re: Not My King / God save The King
Other than seeing a few smirkworthy images of the King with his sausage fingers, it's passing me by. I've seen a smattering (I'm in the UK this week) of union flags and bunting around but to be honest you see more during a major football tournament.
Charles will have a great weekend but give it six months and the wolves will circle, probably using Harry to destroy the monarchy because it's too easy.

Re: Not My King / God save The King
The 'masses' (sp) still see the monarch as a steady hand on the rudder, guiding our country through the stormy waters of these modern times. My mother said there was uncertainty when QE2 came in as 'she was just a girl' and she seemed to do alright.
You have to remember that Charles was into green, eco, renewable long before it was trendy or needed. His trust has done an awful amount of good for people.
His biggest crime was to fall in love with the wrong woman, which has tainted his life ever since.
Most importantly though, when septics asked 'do you know the Queen?', I could answer no, but my daughter does. Sadly Charles isnt in to NH racing!
