I'm sure they do, because that's the cards they've been dealt. Doesn't mean it's actually true though.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:13 pmThe cycling lobbyists make a big play on the health AND environment benefits.weeksy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:06 pmI'm not sure that's why the cyclists do it... MAny of us simply enjoy it.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:02 pm Cycling doesn't appear to save much CO2 if you take the tailbacks into account.
Admittedly as we've seen i'm more at home on the dirt than the lanes, especially busy lanes... but i certainly don't ride because of some eco warrior reasons.
Take yesterday for example.
I drove 9 miles to go and ride, then 9 miles home afterwards.
If i'd not cycled, i wouldn't have driven the car at all.
Today i've got to do the same 18 mile trip to take a mates bicycle back to him after repairing it.... again, if we'd not gone out i wouldn't have done that journey either
Sure in some ways cycling helps the environment so they use that in their favour....

Proper cyclist.
No team radio, no power meters, no lighter-than-air bikes, a little fabric cap and a bonk bag containing a flask of cognac (and probably a few bennies).

Msotly because team radios never existed, nor carbon framed bikes, nor sports scientists... etc etc...Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:23 pm No team radio, no power meters, no lighter-than-air bikes, a little fabric cap and a bonk bag containing a flask of cognac (and probably a few bennies).
It's not like he did it all in 2017 on an old bike beating all the carbon lycra pros. He beat his peers... the same as the rest do day in day out now.

I'd say he stands well in any comparison. It's not like the courses were much easier and to do them without those things makes him greater - in my view of course. He also kept winning over quite a long period, 5 GCs in the TdF over 7 years isn't too shabby.weeksy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:26 pmMsotly because team radios never existed, nor carbon framed bikes, nor sports scientists... etc etc...Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:23 pm No team radio, no power meters, no lighter-than-air bikes, a little fabric cap and a bonk bag containing a flask of cognac (and probably a few bennies).

'He won eight Grand Tours in his career, which was a record when he retired and has only since been surpassed by Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault'.
Anquetil, Merckx and Hinault will still be talked about in 50 years time. Froome? Not so much.

Was is not a car stuck behind a group of selfish pricks for 8 miles rather than a 8 mile tailback?Dodgy knees wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 6:25 pm 8 mile tail back behind a gang of cyclists somewhere, heard on radio.

In general, I don't disagree, though I think Froome will be remembered even if he has had a personality bypass - the French hate him, so that should do the trick.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:40 pmI'd say he stands well in any comparison. On t'other hand, the absolute level of competition has gone up. There may only be a few riders in each grand tour genuinely capable of winning, but I'd honestly say that there are now a dozen riders able to keep the top three or four honest... and the intensity of competition is such that anyone only need one bad day to be swept aside.

Re: New highway code rules, giving way to cyclists
The spring classics are the ones for me, ride, attack, ride, attack, catch, oh another attack.
Rain, cobbles, mud, sweat, crashes, oh don't forget the attacks.
Tour is intriguing, classics are exciting
I'd rather go to the velodrome and see the 6 days than see the tour

Re: New highway code rules, giving way to cyclists
I've been over to France and Belgium to see a number of the Spring Classics. On a bad day, it can be almost as much as a challenge spectating as racing I must do the velodrome thing one day.weeksy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 9:32 pm The spring classics are the ones for me, ride, attack, ride, attack, catch, oh another attack.

Re: New highway code rules, giving way to cyclists
a few years ago me and @crust went to Lee Valley to watch, Cavendish and Wiggins were racing and battling for the win until the last 5 laps of the Madison... It was absolutely EPIC and goes down as one of the highlights of my spectator life for all sports... it's just constant intensity.
It's something i'd love to give a go on.
I'm hoping Spring Classic time is better in terms of weather this year for sure !!!! i don't have any thermals.

Re: New highway code rules, giving way to cyclists
Do a taster session at Lee Valley. Excellent, I went a few years ago with another cycling mate (club cyclist since young teens) and my wife. I'd raced plenty of track but not anything that steep, my mate had never ridden track and my wife had only been cycling a few years - we all had an excellent time. The group we were in were all quite capable so progression was quite quick - the last 20 minutes they just let us ride.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 01, 2022 1:03 pma few years ago me and @crust went to Lee Valley to watch, Cavendish and Wiggins were racing and battling for the win until the last 5 laps of the Madison...
