I think the strongest correlation with income is how hard you work rather than how bright you are. As Steinbeck said, the poor do not see themselves as an exploited proletariat, merely temporarily embarrassed millionaires. Or as the BBCC put it: some lads graft hard, some lads sell nosey.Potter wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 5:48 amI haven't seen this theory, why does he suggest that? Is it because because poorly paid people are more likely to be lower skilled and lower in intelligence and therefore more likely to get involved in crime, but if you give them enough money they won't do any crime or antisocial behaviour?
Whatever the theory, I see two issues, firstly this...(this is what happens when bin men get too much money )
And secondly, if you reverse the natural situation and make clever people poor, then they will eventually scheme. Human nature and natural order will conspire to make them very mean and they'll eventually end up back at the top but this time they will be ruthless. Social engineering can only be taken so far until nature says "Hang on a minute" and puts things back to how she intended.

I really think you’d better have a sensible answer to the lawyer’s question about the reasons for your decision or for your advice to those making the decision.

At the moment I'm trying to get her to take a year out of education so that she can decide what she wants to do.Potter wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 1:42 pmI think few people are able to focus and cut through what the system says they should do, it's a sausage factory that churns people through.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 10:41 am I'm currently having the "what degree should I do" discussion with my 17 year old daughter, she seems to have no concept of what she'll do with this degree once she's got it, fuck knows what her teachers have told her, because she doesn't appear to have grasped the concept that qualifications are something you use to get a job.
My wife has a degree, I don't, discussions aren't going well.
My daughter is the same, she thinks that people should look up from their desk because she has a degree in Business. It's one of those non-specialist degrees that is pretty generic, it's not like she wants to design bridges and has a degree in Structural Engineering with a specialist element of bridge design from a renowned school known for churning out bridge designers.
I'm not saying it's useless, I find that degree holders are usually better at researching information, writing reports and being able to analyse and collate data, I'm just saying it's not the golden ticket, it's important for graduate schemes and jobs starts I suppose, although I personally spend more time asking young people about them and what they do in their spare time, that usually tells me more than their degree or anything.
I'd value a DOE Gold award over a degree, I don't know what it's like now but they weren't easy to get when I did it.
Personally I'd rather employ someone with 3 years work experience than employ someone with a degree, as you say degree holders are good at writing reports, but it's a skill that can be taught on the job, and how many starter jobs involve writing reports that aren't reviewed and amended by the reviewer?

I had the opposite issue when I was 17. Both parents were desperate for me to go to university (apparently I'm quite brainy - according to some test sometime ) but the subjects I was interested in that I could do at university were English and History. And my RDad didn't want me to be a teacher and I couldn't see any point in going to university for 3 years to get a degree but without knowing what I wanted to do with it afterwards!!Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 2:17 pmAt the moment I'm trying to get her to take a year out of education so that she can decide what she wants to do.Potter wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 1:42 pmI think few people are able to focus and cut through what the system says they should do, it's a sausage factory that churns people through.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 10:41 am I'm currently having the "what degree should I do" discussion with my 17 year old daughter, she seems to have no concept of what she'll do with this degree once she's got it, fuck knows what her teachers have told her, because she doesn't appear to have grasped the concept that qualifications are something you use to get a job.

I wanted to be a teacher, a hairdresser or a photographer!! RDad didn't want me to be a teacher, mother didn't want me to be a hairdresser and when I eventually went to a local college to do Media Studies (only because there was supposed to be a big section on photography) it turned out that they didn't have a photography teacher for most of the first year What I should have done was an apprenticeship with a photographer, but by the time I realised that (zero guidance/help as it wasn't approved of either!) I was too old, left home, trying to work to survive
TBF, I still don't know what I want to do - that I can do now!! I have done some jobs I've loved and the job/business I have I enjoy and should be able to build on when the world get backs to something like normal. But I do still wish I'd been 'allowed' to be a teacher or a hairdresser back when I was 18. More the hairdresser really!!
But hey ho
I have told my niece and nephew that taking time out to work and see a different side of life is quite a good thing, so I hope they won't be 'pushed' by their parents (faint hope as I know the boy has already been told by his father that "you can't be a nurse, that's a woman's job" )
GOod luck with the negotiations!!

I gave a wry smile at that. The only careers advice I got was "Would you like to be a male nurse?" I said "No" and that was that. I did wonder what other sort of nurse I could be, although, in my defence, that was back in the bad old days when we thought there were only two genders.

Not for the first time you've missed the point. Which in this case is why this might have been suggested, and have instead launched into a diatribe about those with lower skills and lower intelligence.Potter wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 5:48 amI haven't seen this theory, why does he suggest that? She's voicing her opinion, it's called free speech, it's something the so called liberal left seem determined to get rid of, if you have an opinion different to theirs they'll find an insulting label for you in an attempt to bully you into keeping quiet. I’m all for free speech, however there is a line and free speech doesn’t mean you can incite hatred or death or hurt on others.
As for the degree conversation: my guess is fromage doesn’t have an education, which is why their view falls short of rational.
I see there are two types of degree: those that you do to play the game to get you into the career you choose/fall in to…and those you choose to further your understanding of the career you have chosen. I’ve personally got more out of the latter.
Also: my father was outraged I wanted to be a nurse. It worked out ok ( I don’t have a degree in nursing)

Ahh... lovely degrees. No-one knows more about them than those who don't have one.
I think you still need one to be a rocket scientist, brain surgeon, doctor, dentist or lawyer. Probably to be a teacher or nurse these days too by the sound of it. I imagine they're not required for sparking or NDWiITery however.

I have cited you (and a couple of other friends) to my nephew to help show that if that is the career he'd like, then stand up to his dad and do it!!
(It was a few years ago now and I think his plans have changed - the sad thing is that only he will ever know if his dad caused that change or if he'd have moved away from the idea of nursing anyway )

Surely criticising maroons like that spitty-faced ex-nurse is what free speech is all about? The most surprising thing about that sort of nonsense is the momentum it generates on social meeja and in actual physical form in rallies with folk prepared to put their faces besides their banner.
More power to them. As a definite woolly liberal I encourage people to speak without filtering their gob and shout words they don't understand. (A) it's funny. (B) when a real issue comes along, blm?, they can hardly complain. Or maybe they can?
Lolz at the gammony right, again, creating their own TV news channel because apparently state sponsored news is too left wing for them.

I don't think my parents would have cared if I decided to become a nurse, I suspect the patients might have been more bothered having about having an 18 year old me looking after them - I've seriously mellowed with age, and I'm opionated now.
