But - I won't ski when completely knackered and I will be talking to the guys here to find a decent support for the knees to prevent future twist fractures.

Was at a Govt office here in town last year. Emptied pockets into the tray & walked through the metal detector.

It didn't react to the metal knee or hardware in my wrist...

I told the security guard that it was unusual for the machine not to react. His reply: "It doesn't work, it's been broken for a while..."

And your employers are ok with this?

I live in an area of ski resorts. Our winter work is based on ski tourism. If they banned workers from skiing, then they would have a lot less workers

When I tried to apologise to my boss for having the accident and leaving them (maybe) short for the last couple of months of the season, he said "it happens, don't worry"

Somewhat pissed off with an issue that may or may not be an issue (my brain leaps to incorrect conclusions sometimes, based on facts known, but I really need to try and see the doc here tomorrow to get some answers from him or the surgeon)

Basically, anytime I "walk" (crutches/pool/air-treadmill) and it's more than about 25-30% weight bearing, the inside of my knee hurts. This is not when full weight on the leg, but more as it moves into position and back out, including when the foot is flat.

Me and the physio have been looking at the xray and where I get the hurty bit is the top of the plate on the inside of the knee Basically looks as if the plate is sticking out from the bone, but I'm hoping that is just because some of the last layer of bone doesn't show up??? Maybe it's rubbing some skin/muscle/tissue ???

It's not "that" bad because once I stop walking it doesn't hurt (just a bit grumbly for maybe 15 mins) and any heat dies down with the help of an ice pack.

I'm reasonably sure it isn't "bone pain" because it really isn't that bad, but I'm confused about it and also proper pissed off because it's slowing down the rate of getting to even 50%, let alone 100%

BUT - the xray from 2022 and the top of the plate looks a bit sticky out but I have no recollection of that hurting last time (although I don't have much memory aside from stress last time and also there was a bit of nerve damage on that side of the leg from the op, so maybe I just couldn't feel it?? )

Spoke to my other physio this morning and she thinks it probably is bone pain (given that there are lots of fractures and lots of material/meral) and that really, to get to 50% in two weeks is very fast for a complex fracture

She suggested dropping back to 35% in the pool this afternoon and starting there on Monday and see what happens.

I did realise that last time I was at 30% at two weeks on a very simple fracture. No idea why I thought I could do 50 in two weeks on this one (except it seemed to be ‘normal’ to everyone else )

TL:DR - Knee's a bit shit, not healing right?

The surgeon kinda stressed/upset me yesterday as he doesn't think the bone is consolidating properly He asked me about pain and I still struggle to explain or understand what is actual pain - pain to me is seriously sharp and unbearable, but I do often have a level of discomfort that affects how I can walk, but I wouldn't call it pain (I'm probably wrong)!

Yesterday I walked over 2.5kms and was fine; I take 1g of paracetamol and a thing of ketaprofene morning and evening (and sometimes a paracetamol midday) - I've mainly taken these for the anti-inflam properties since the knee is definitely swollen still and gets bigger if I walk a lot, it also helps with the shoulder.

I forgot this morning !! Didn't walk as far (1.8km total) but I struggled to get back to the car after I saw my GP and get to the house from the car !!!

So I guess that's pain if it makes walking difficult


The surgeon said that he should sign me off for three more months; I refused, that would make it over 6 months off work, not gonna happen!! We agreed end of July and I get a CT Scan on 8th September and then he tells me how bad the healing is. He thinks he'll have to do a "complicated" total knee replacement FFS, I know I'll need a KR at some point but was hoping to put it off for a few years!! So being told its possibly on the cards kinda soon was not ideal

I'm not sure what to do to help the healing, didn't remember to ask the GP that! But I do try and eat a pretty balanced diet, I eat a good amount of protein, Vit D should be a pretty good level as I try and get in the sun for a while every day (without burning)


Anyway - the GP is someone that knows I cry with no warning if stressed/worried! I've seen him for the shoulder for about 5 or 6 years and for the last knee fracture, so he kinda gets I'm odd but balanced (apart from the random tears!!!). He was less scary and just said - wait for the 8 Sept and come and see me after you see the surgeon. I don't think he's keen that I go back to work in August but I have pointed out that I only drive automatics, so as long as I can get in and out of the bus, all should be good!!

Long chat with a few managers at work today and they understand the lack of definite dates, but are being very patient - they still want me back !!


Anyway, here ya go. X-ray on left from 26 April and on the right 29 June

The bits that haven't (apparently) healed well are circled in red (both side for comparison and the fibia fracture in green, cos that is totally fine Top of the tibia seems to have "lost" some 'material' - but he used some filler to make that bit the right shape, but I guess that will be a problem because the cartilage/miniscus is gonna grate on that

The surgeon said that the lack of consolidation is possibly due to the amount of metal. (My weight probably doesn't help, more pressure through all the bits )

Probably not much interest for most, but I'm a smidge stressed about it all and writing it all helps a bit

Latest one looks lke the bones have been fragmenting? Time for a new knee while you still can, probably lead to a better outcome than what you have now tbh .

Yeah, I just could have done with waiting a year or two for the new knee, REALLY wanted a summer on a bike before being off again for a summer

And if the top of the tibia doesn't heal properly, then it won't be a simple knee replacement (I didn't ask for details - still hoping I won't need it too soon )

Saw a mate yesterday who lost the lower leg to a bad fracture a few months ago, then it didn't heal/got an infection & they took it at mid-thigh shortly after the first op.
Not sure WTF else is going on, guy is still compos mentis, but looks like he was just found at Belsen. Skin is hanging off him & his arms are about 2in dia.

All sounds a bit plop Noggers, wishing you some luck, try and keep your chin up.

The attitude is currently hanging on by a thread !! But - no choice really, have to try and be positive cos no one's gonna do that for me

Just saw the physio, apparently I'm the third patient he's been seeing this summer that is having bone consolidation issues But, since the surgeon didn't say stop walking on it, we'll just keep going and see what the CT Scan says on 8 september

I have given up and bought a toilet booster thingy - decided I wouldn't spend the money (it's not paid for by the healthcare, non reimbursable) but since I may struggle with the knee a bit longer and I'll need the sodding booster thingy when (not if it seems) I get the complicated knee replacement, might as well just get it and at least getting off the loo will be easier !!


I've also collected the knee support he suggested - possibly a bit bulky but it feels like it might help a bit so that will now prevent and tanning when out and about

Saw my normal physio today - actually for my shoulder but he wanted the info on my knee too (and whilst harsh on occasion, I value his opinion)

Anyway, he was even more negative about the new xray than the surgeon
He confirmed with me that I’m ok for him to talk to my GP (they’re in the same building and are mates; and both have seen me through a fair few years of damage, the physio a few years longer but they both know me/my history well!!) - he’s also going to talk to my other physio which is good because if I need to see the resort guy for the knee a few weeks, he’ll have the info from the valley guy!!

Anyway, he feels I can’t have the total replacement until the bone has consolidated a lot more/better; half good and half bad - really want to go back to work but he also sucked his teeth about that so I may be off a bit longer And really wanted to be biking by spring but will probably be having my bastard knee rebuilt in spring, so another 6ish months before I can ride

Also commented that the xray isn’t exactly the same angle, so might suggest getting an updated one and taking the April images so the radiographer gets the exact same angle!

And whilst I know it’s not the most important thing in life, I only have two sports/passions - skiing and motorbiking. I know I’ve been warned off bikes till spring, but had hoped to do some very simple skiing this winter (touring on piste early and possibly a couple of runs at opening time before its busy and before the snow gets chopped up). But, he shot that down in flames

So, trying to be positive but actually fucking miserable!! And sorry - you guys get all this cos I don’t really have anyone else. As per, the guys in resort are always busy and yes I do have some French friends down here but I know they’re busy/have families /work too so I don’t want to load them up either
