I know the thread is from February, but here’s a quick idea: for city driving under £5k, I went with a Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i (chain, no wet belt). Good fuel economy, reliable, cheap parts. I went to MB MOTORS for a pre-purchase inspection and they told me clearly what needed doing right away versus what could wait. If it’s just commuting and Tesco runs, a Yaris/Jazz/Swift will do the job without issues.

When looking at older Japanese cars, check mot history for any corrosion. Engines out last the bodies.
