Overtaking

I would seem massively obvious to me that you need to be sure it's clear before you start accelerating? Or have I missed something (other than oncoming cars )?

As the old saying goes, 'common sense isn't common enough'.

It's about being realistic.

I guess that some riders see X distance, consider that plenty to complete the overtake - but don't consider that someone approaching from the opposite direction could have that distance. Possibly what happened in my video?

Then there's at least two other questions:
- is there anything ahead which could cause the driver to move or turn right?
- is there anywhere ahead where another vehicle could emerge?

"Hidden Junctions" aren't really a thing either AFAIK? They have long white centre lines on the road being joined and/or triangular warning signs - but I wouldn't like to say those markings are applied with 100% reliability.

Farmer Palmer out on the fields might have other thoughts.

His idea of 'road markings' is a trail of mud and stones.

Similar with house entrances. No markings, but hedges might be trimmed tidily, you might see the roof, perhaps telegraph wires, etc.

About this overtaking lark...it all depends what bike you're on. A powerful bike can just go when he wants, as in, see if clear and bugger off into the distance.

on the other hand, if on a lower powered bike, it takes a bit more artistic charm. On the Enfield and depending on road I suppose, I have to drop back a bit then go for it just as the oncoming car passes. To the driver in front it probably doesn't look very good, getting quite close to his offside rear, but sometimes it has to be done.
