Boeing and NASA are completely hamstrung by the fact everything has to be bid, rebid, vetted and then bid again. They're probably also really harmed by the fact all the bright young people want to work for SpaceX or similar.

Boeing used to be capable of great things. The 747 was designed on a private dollar (sort of, its roots are in a USAF programme) and nearly bankrupted the company, but then they completely transformed the industry and put everyone out of business/bought them out. It took a state backed, multi national enterprise (Airbus) to unseat them.

Oh and a well timed oil crisis helped too.

Nerd note: a key part of the 747's design was the size of a freight container (well, two).

The reason for Boeing's trouble are a direct result of buying out MDD. Boeing WAS run by the engineers who knew what the fuck they were doing, now it's run by the same useless fucks who ran MDD into the ground. Boeing should have let the MMD management quietly retire with golden parachutes, that would have cost a fuck-ton less than the cascading clusterfuck that came with moving them into management at Boeing.

Yeah, I've seen a few things that suggest that McDonnal Douglas management arent keen on much in the way of product testing or quality control and have created a toxic workplace.
