I've accepted I'm not invincible and got responsible, it's on my mind that I've already outlived my mum's brother who had a heart attack.
The works benefts change window came round and while my life is well insured I realised there's a big gap if I'm incapacitated, I control almost all our finances so if I can't use my bank account we're all a bit screwed.
I've signed up for a will kit, taken enough incapacitation insurance to settle the mortgage (makes car insurance look well cheap) and kicked off a lasting power of attorney.
The LPA is a bit scary but it looks like I can easily block it if someone tries to abuse it.

The last couple of years (and still ongoing) We've had to deal with 3 estates and only one of them had made a will. If folk could only see the mess left behind when a person dies intestate,they'd see making a will as a very positive thing. It can tear families apart.

It's when they ask "is it burial or cremation?" and you realise you don't have a scooby doo. I've already had this talk with my parents, who touch wood seem like they'll still be fit and healthy for a good few years yet, and they took it in the right way thankfully. They also made me their executor, shoulda kept schtum

I found that as well, a decent internet connection suddenly showed my 4 year old premium router wasn't as premium as I was lead to believe.

Got home from a night shift (last one for a few days), beautiful morning so why waste it sleeping and some tree's had arrived. So I planted a Mulberry (long term project, they can take 7-10 years before fruiting), a Quince, and two plum trees. I also transplanted a gooseberry bush that Mrs M wanted moving. After that I got the naughty weed killer out and poured chemical death on all the weeds on the front pathway around the house.

Pretty sure I've mentioned this before, probably in this thread, but there are a couple of quince trees in the community orchard a few hundred metres from my house.

Quince on it's own? Meh.

No idea if I'll like them, just seemed a bit different. Though it looks like it'll go well in a crumble recipe if cooked for ages.

I've mentioned it before but I just simmer them whole, peel and quarter them, then fry them in butter and serve 'em up like a veg with tagine and couscous. They need to be rock hard ones though. The veg stall at the local market sometimes has them but, whatever variety they are, they turn to mush really fast when you simmer them.

Might have to have a trip to the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale and pick their brains.

Trying to make repairs to the runaround car after step-sons first day driving after passing his test

Used a hot air gun to heat bumper and pull our dent, realigned (hammered) brackets behind headlight and wing so they now align again, glue gun on the foglight bracket. All I need now is the surround for the DRL and its good to go again!

Today has been a day of win so far:

Idiots at the council have finally capitulated over the slates for the roof and we have eventually left the circle of doom of their making in respect of the supply of a sample. Miraculously after speaking to a grown up decision maker*, three new photos and an email or two, we don’t need to provide a physical sample from the pallet of slates actually being used and our choice have been signed off.

Window company is coming out next Monday to measure up and price for 5 conservation grade double glazed sliding sash windows, 2 casement windows, a set of French doors (again, conservation grade double glazed) and possibly a back door. We are buying directly from the factory so won’t be as arse rapingly expensive as using one of the big firms**

I have just scoffed a delightful bacon and cheese burger with hand cut fries made by my chef mate***. I need a nap now!

* it would appear the planning officer, who I have had a bad experience with previously, was exceeding her remit in terms of what the conservation dept wanted… I should have lodged a formal complaint after the first display of ineptitude but didn’t and all I want is my consent this time to get the work done so probably won’t bother this time.

** initial quote was 33% less than an online quote tool for items made in Lithuania imported by a UK distributor, same price as directly from Lithuania and 50% less than a local “specialist” joinery firm (all on supply only). The supply and fit mob are broadly double the cost of the local specialist firm…

(When we first rented a place in the Newcastle area we went up there on a weeks camping holiday at Seaton while we a place sorted. Having got a place sorted the owner invited us to come over and sign the agreements. Turned out she lived in an historic place linked to George Stephenson. https://twsitelines.info/SMR/4877 I can imagine them getting a bit pernickety about the tiles on that one. It was v nice and quite luxe inside so I'm a bit surprised it was turned into a school caretaker's house in 2002).
