56 is a shitty deal innit. At least it was, relatively, quick.
Quick? Not exactly. He'd been in hospital for 3 months apparently.DefTrap wrote: Thu Mar 02, 2023 5:43 pm56 is a shitty deal innit. At least it was, relatively, quick.
Well yeah, I'm sure there's a sweet spot of knowing, putting your things in order, minimal pain. I guess he had two out of three. And the third less than a lot of people.Count Steer wrote: Thu Mar 02, 2023 5:58 pm Quick? Not exactly. He'd been in hospital for 3 months apparently.![]()
Oh man.mangocrazy wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 12:29 pm And now David Lindley - pedal steel and slide guitar wizard. My heroes are dropping like flies.
A mate of mine saw them together in concert. I've been envious ever since. And Mercury Blues is probably my all time favourite DL track. One of the most enjoyable concerts I've been to was Lindley and Cooder at the Ulster Hall, with Ry's son Joachim on drums.
Lindley is one of the greats. Rest easy guitar man.
I remember Ry Cooder being more than a little pissed off with the sound on BTYD, blaming it on the digital recording process. After that I think he went back to analogue for all his subsequent recordings. I'd also have to add the 'Get Rhythm' album to your two picks, although that didn't fearure David Lindley.Count Steer wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 4:04 pm A key part of one of my possible Desert Island Discs, 'Bop Till You Drop' and one of the greatest film soundtracks 'Paris, Texas'. Yup. 'Get Rhythm' is a fine album but if we're including non-Lindley albums then 'Borderline' edges it, for me. 'Crazy 'Bout an Automobile' is a highlight but every track is a gem.mangocrazy wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 4:27 pmI remember Ry Cooder being more than a little pissed off with the sound on BTYD, blaming it on the digital recording process. Yeah,Cooder swore 'never again' after Bop. I still loved it though. He and Lindley loved all those cheap/barely tuneable instruments,a tip of the hat to roots, when folk couldn't afford 10k Martins/Fenders and boutique was a clothes shop.mangocrazy wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 4:27 pmI remember Ry Cooder being more than a little pissed off with the sound on BTYD, blaming it on the digital recording process. I think it was 'too clean' and sterile sounding for a something released by a walking roots encyclopaedia. Needz moar patina.Count Steer wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 5:25 pm Interesting about theover 'Bop'. I can't say I ever had any conniptions about the recording when I first bought it on vinyl or when I got the CD. It might be a little 'muddy' or 'bassy' I suppose but tbh the music just shines through.
