There's lots of nice roads in the peaks, I do a lap from my house that takes in the Strines, the Snake and Holme Moss, but it misses out the more southern areas and the Hope Valley, Winnats, Cat and Fiddle, etc.. I occasionally take a back road route to CMC at Clay Cross

I used to live in Hope. But not that one. The next place over from it was Caergwrle. From Wiki -

'Caergwrle's long association with the adjacent village of Hope has given rise to a well-known local joke: "Live in Hope, die in Caergwrle".[7] This was already described as an "old saying" in the 19th century, when it was recorded by the antiquarian John Askew Roberts.'

Dunno if it still happens but there was a stretch of Chesterfield that was (in)famous for hen night pub crawls. Apparently the area got pretty scarey.

You don't have to get very far out of the place before it becomes quite pleasant.

A Premier Inn has now been booked, dunno where abouts in Chesterfield I'm guessing out of the way like most of them are. Lots of ABNBs checked to try and get us all in but most of the right size were in out of the way places with no local pubs in walking distance for food or didn't fit someone or others requirements. Premier Inn tend to fit the bill of cheap/decent with a pub attached so should see us right. And should be able to find somewhere half decent to get a bite to eat if it's in Chesterfield somewhere. TBH I think we'll be out most of the time riding and just back of an evening. My Dad is coming too which is great

So 3 of the 4 Vincent boys out on a jolly. Think we'll be going 150 odd miles a day at least while we are there so should get to see a fair amount.

Good to hear decent reviews of MCT, it's what I've heard over the years. Shock wise I'm more leaning towards the Nitron as they get good reviews, are decent value and are British. If I do, think I'll go for a black spring though as their pale blue signature ones don't really fit with anything on the bike and don't wanna be a Bellwood. Will check others too though including the GSXR fitment. The standard shock is fine most of the time but loses composure over ripples/series of bumps and is a bit stiff/crashy rather than a nice plush action which is more what I'm after esp given the state of the roads. I want some more compliance but without losing the nice direct steering/feeling the bike gives. The shock has preload and rebound as standard but I believe it's a bit budget so is always going to feel what it is. My understanding is that the forks are pretty good with full adjustment but best set with correct springs/oil/set up. However I'm going to call MCT first to get some advice. Then it'll be whether I buy a new shock from them and get them to fit it or source something in advance if there are any second hand ones about, but then I guess you run the risk of not having the correct spring for me.

I'd highly recommend MCT too - all of my 'cared for' bikes went through Darren and his fettling, his advice is well worth taking on board and isn't all about him upselling his services.
My mate who is going in to there today has an old CB750 and Darren is rebuilding both his OEM rear shocks to his spec for a very reasonable price - about 50% the cost of replacing both with a budget brand.

Another vote for MCT here, if only for the fact that John at Revs Racing was directing all his customers to Darren when he decided to retire. It's about the best recommendation I can think of; one professional to another.

Boring, messy job but finally cleaned and lubed the chain. Meant to do it the week after I washed it for winter hibernation but lots of stuff happened or the weather was awful and didn't get round to it. Sunday I was supposed to be fitting some shutters and taking a trampoline down, plus assorted garden stuff so thought it'd get missed again but turns out Mrs buggered up the shutter order (got width and length measures wrong way around

) so as soon as garden stuff was done I got busy with the WD chain cleaner. The chain looked fine but was fairly dry, bit grubby and a bit stiff. Always surprised with how effective the WD spray is. Give it a spray and it still looks shite but loads of crap falls off, but quick scrub with a chain brush and a second spray sees it shiny and new looking. Decided as I'm not riding at the minute to use the XCP chain lube. I've found it's too flingy for me when riding but it leaves the chain positively zingy and oiled. I've put more on than needed for now to give the O rings a good oil bath and will give it a proper wipe over before the first ride.

Whilst I was down there remembered I still need to give the Cat a good scrub with WD40 as some chain residue is baked on. I'd also like to remove the sprocket cover and clean that out, but that requires disconnecting the clutch cable and not sure I want to risk having to faff about with adjustment after. Yes I am that lazy

Much preferred the 690's plain cover that was a quick 3 bolts. For that reason the Suzuki cover has 8k miles worth of lube in it

and must be well minging. But out of sight...

I will imminently be selling the Nitron R2 shock (with remote preload adjust) I bought for my bike (2nd hand but only 1000 miles old) if it was of interest...?

I'm having a bit of a bike cull, and through no other reason than being surplus to requirements, the GSXS will be going as will any mods I have done to it too... Might also mean the Translogic QS will be going too, if I can be bothered to remove it...

Possibly on the shock, the caveat being I might have to re-spring it and plus with the remote preload and extra adjustment I'm guessing could be a fair bit more than a new base model all in? Keep me posted either way please

Brampton mile - had something like 23 pubs on a mile stretch of road, once got into an altercation in the early hours with a shirtless man who had "made in Brampton" tattooed across his beer gut

Not sure what the attraction is for Chesterfield as a base when there are lots of campsites in places that are closer to the good roads. If you want to camp close to a population centre I'd choose somewhere like Bakewell, which is surrounded by good roads.

No. But very particular needs. I'm the only one sharing a room for example, with my old man, cos everyone wanted their own room. Then they wanted views, and hot tubs

One place was nearly picked and it was, to be fair, really nice. But it was 2 miles to the nearest pub in the middle of nowhere. So then my brother found another place near a nice town that could fit us all in, but then it become - I would rather my own room blah, blah. So Premier Inn works. Albeit in a shithole

As long as I can get a pint of an evening and an average burger if needed, I'm happy as plenty of nice places we'll visit during the day.

I find Premier inn's work pretty well as long as there's decent parking. Room, bed, shower and pub next door. Some might be in dodgy areas, Derby South springs to mind, but generally they tick the boxes.

Bollox to the camping, far too much shit to carry.
