In 2011, Colin Weir and his wife Chris won £161 million on the EuroMillions. It was one of the largest lottery jackpots in European history. They were from Largs, a small town in North Ayrshire, Scotland.
Within seven years, they had divorced. Chris took roughly half. Colin was left with around £66 million.
He spent approximately £100,000 a week.
But before anyone calls him reckless, it's worth looking at what he actually did with it. He bought a 55 per cent stake in Partick Thistle, his local football club, with plans to hand the shares to supporters. He set up the Thistle Weir Youth Academy. He created the Weir Charitable Trust, which funded community groups, sports facilities, and animal welfare across Scotland. He donated £1 million to the Scottish independence campaign.
He also bought luxury cars, houses, holidays, and helped friends and family pay off debts. He lived exactly the way most people say they would if they won the lottery.
Colin Weir died on December 27, 2019, at the age of 71, from sepsis and acute kidney injury. By then, roughly £40 million of his post-divorce fortune had been spent or given away.
His remaining estate went to his two children. The football club got a youth academy. The charities got funded. And a man from a small Scottish town spent eight years doing whatever he wanted with money he never expected to have
