Chill, people. Let's calm everybody down with a video of baby meerkats. It is news, as it is on the BBC News website, so we're all good...

I think they've named them 'Trump' and 'Biden' ;)

Blimey....

Must have been scary as hell.

But...

I'm amazed that doors can be opened mid flight.
Also I always thought that due to sudden pressure loss, the passengers would be successful out. Amazed that the perpetrator wasn't sucked out.

I was just reading the article on the Beeb site, it was pretty close to landing so there wouldn't have been much of a pressure difference.

They're always 'plug doors' which open inwards. I.e. they're forced shut by the pressure, you can't open them anywhere other than very near the ground.

Any door which opens outwards (like the cargo ones) has multiple safety locks to keep it shut. Just ask the DC10.

They're* forced shut by the difference in air pressure outside/inside. Until you're "a bit" off the ground that difference isn't there, obviously also applies in reverse when you're coming down.

*meant to be! Certainly they would be o that ^ plane, you can see in the photo how it swings inwards before opening

Open doors is kids stuff BTW. Amazingly only one person was killed by this...

It must have been opened (or failed) at the point where the lack of pressure difference allowed it to be opened but before they were armed (unless the slide was ripped away).

Edit - looking at the pic you can see the slide has deployed so it must have been very close to landing

Slide was my first thought too!

Luckily it was behind the wing, you don't want that big bit of rubber going through the engine.

In reality no-one was in any great danger here, so long as they remained seated with their tray table in the stowed position.

Still amazed there's no central locking like cars.

RyanAirs could ask you to pay a door surcharge as aeroplane doors now seem to be a luxury travel item.
