800 years ago, someone built a lockbox with 4 billion possible combinations.
the artifact is a seljuk-era box with a mechanical combination lock made around 1200–1201 ad in iran. it has four double dials with 16 positions each, giving about 4,294,967,296 possible settings.
the box uses multiple dials with engravings that must align in the correct order to open. depending on how you count the permutations (number of dials × number of characters per dial), the possible combinations land in the billions range, which is insane for the medieval period.

Here at the hospital they paid someone to make the toilet signs confusing.
