as I write Im in Sweden on day 6 of a solo bike trip. being solo during the day is nice less faffing around... etc but it would be nice to have have someone to natter to in the evenings. don't get me wrong the Fri and Saturday night crowds in pubs here are great, but the rest of the week can be a bit quieter

That's why I usually go on 'organized' tours. I can go where I want, stop where I want, but have a hotel booked for the end of the day and some people to chat with. All the UK firms I have used give you a GPX file to get you to the next destination, but are totally relaxed about you ignoring it and choosing your own route. I researched some US trips and they were WAAAAY more rigid, wanting you to ride in a posse and obey the commands of the road captain. Not for me!

Some nights can be quiet so it's an early night, but you have those other nights where you get chatting to some other travellers and have a great evening.

I quite enjoy both.
