Still waiting for the parts from Specialized, apparently they had to be sourced from China/Malaysia/Singapore/somewhere.

His bike is still OK, but the bolt we've screwed up does loosen slightly after a days hard riding at times.

Just given it a full strip/check and apart from that it's all good.

New suspension linkage finally along with new bolt kit.

Slightly disappointed in Specialized with how long it took to get the bolts of what isn't exactly an old bike. 9 weeks, if i hadn't manage to fudge things, he'd have been without a bike for 9 weeks...

Thinking about this for a post winter project kind of thing for the boy.

I'm thinking he's got somewhere between 6 and 12 months left on his Specialized before he outgrows it and it may be nice as a project for me and him to build his new bike together instead of just buying it.

Nice idea, but a very spendy way of doing it?
Wouldn't it be easier to buy one, dismantle it and rebuild it together, replacing whatever bits that need upgrading etc?

I haven't done the sums on components for decades since I built a roadie. It ended up costing more than a similar specced complete bike!

The plan will be to move everything from his current bike onto it. Then sell his frame for £500

TBH I have built most of the bikes I have owned. So around 10 or so bikes . Did buy an Orange Patriot in 2006 and a Trek Y11 in around 1996 ...
Wheels and stuff come from STW classifieds / eBay
Real consumables get replaced as new.

I am guessing my current crank set ( which is a x2 - but run a 1) is 10 years old at least.
If you can sell the old frame, and don't mined buying some of the stuff 2nd hand , to can spec stuff up really nicely.

That one didn't work out as the back end was 142*12 and we need 148*12. Sizing one way with spacers is OK, but sizing down is more complex. So we've decided not to jump on that particular one at the moment and see what the next few weeks and months brings on Ebay/Pinkbike.

Aye, it doesn't get more 'me' in that context too. Frame size is good, price is good, they're built locally (well they were when it was new, now they're mostly done up north). Lifetime warranty on frame too....

I didn't actually think they were running a series this year due to Covid stuff, but it seems they are. It's currently full but i've requested an entry for me and the lad. I think he's now at the stage where he's going to trounce me, but it's all good fun.

So we're on the reserve list for now, fingers crossed we get an entry.
