We were still using Victorian coins right up to decimalisation. Why would this be any different?

Re: HM the Queen on her way out?
I've not seen any nastiness about the queen online but numerous social media posts and internet clickbait saying how appallingly unsympathetic people are being.
It's a good test of internet algorithms directing you to what you want to see I suppose.

All still seems surreal to me...reminds me very much of when my FiL died. She's not really dead is she? You're having me on surely?
Nice to see Charles III is putting all the previous behind closed doors stuff out there.

Watched the proclamation this morning. Amazing to see the Heralds on the balcony and to think that's how we used to find out.
I've been a fan of Charles for years and always thought he'd make a great King. He's approached this transition with incredible humility and respect.

He's know for being a sensitive soul and you cold see the tears in his eyes during his speech, but he kept himself composed.Yorick wrote: ↑Sat Sep 10, 2022 12:51 pmAnd he must be hurting like hell inside. Mrs D asked 'why does that guy need to shout so much?'.
The guy, quite literally, proclaiming stuff from the rooftop you mean?

Will the Trooping of the Colour still remain as an 'official birthday'? Charles' actual birthday in November.

Re: HM the Queen on her way out?
The Queens actual birthday was in April IIRC. Trooping the Colour may move, but it wont be to November.

Just had a 2 minute silence before the BSB race at Snetterton. Total silence which is eerie at a race circuit.
Then God Save The King. Had to stop myself blubbing.

I take it back. Lots of paddys moaning about Cromwell and generational trauma when asked why they're bitching.

I can understand people bitching about the concept of a hereditary monarchy, but surely even the most churlish Republicans could admit that Liz did a difficult, almost impossible' job supremely well. She took the concept of duty to an almost superhuman level.
And people bitching about Empire and repression should understand that the Monarch has no real power - that resides in the government of the day. The Queen/King merely rubber-stamps policy decided by the government.

Re: HM the Queen on her way out?
And, weirdly, that's not actually enshrined anywhere. The Monarch could not rubber stamp if they wanted...at least, technically they could.
But making a scene like that just wouldn't be British would it?
That's the main reason we persist with ceremony like today. Nobody rocks the boat, everyone plays along and we don't have to write it down like Americans.

If the Monarch of the day refused to 'rubber stamp' (for want of a better phrase) any legislation it would provoke a constitutional crisis.
And nobody wants one of those, do they?

The counterpoint to that is all the military types shedding tears for the leader to whom they pledged allegiance ..mangocrazy wrote: ↑Sat Sep 10, 2022 9:06 pm I can understand people bitching about the concept of a hereditary monarchy, but surely even the most churlish Republicans could admit that Liz did a difficult, almost impossible' job supremely well. The counterpoint to that is people shedding tears for 'their country' or a flag to which they pledged allegiance. Ukraine being a current example.
