It is a hard thing to do in this vocation. A funeral for a 100 year old man last week, 88 year old today, 21week old baby Thursday, 55 year old man next week Wednesday and a funeral visit next week Thursday. In all these visits and services I take, I meet with families at their lowest points and walk in dark places of grief with them, to bring comfort, a listening ear, a gentle word and kindness.Yorick wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 6:31 pmNot an easy jobthe_priest wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 6:21 pm Took a funeral today. They can be v honest too...like the chap in Silifke that put his head in his hands and said 'Ah. You are murdering my language'.Yambo wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 8:41 pm Went to Paddock Wood with M and her Mum to see her Dad at the funeral director's CoR.
On the way back stopped in East Peckham for a glass of wine and had a chat with a Turkish guy who has a kebab shop there, in Turkish. He was rather surprised and very complimentary about my Turkish which just goes to show how friendly Turks can be.![]()

Today, went to visit the SiL and deliver her b'day present.
He was actually really nice and appreciated that someone actually had a bit of the language and tried - not many people bothered as Turkish wasn't going to help much anywhere elseNoggin wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 9:17 pmSome of the french I know look at me like that sometimes, the rest say "ewe arrrre soo cuuuute when you speeek the french"Count Steer wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 8:53 pmThey can be v honest too...like the chap in Silifke that put his head in his hands and said 'Ah. It was my pronunciation that finished him off! (He was a geography teacher with a sideline in accommodation....and excellent English).
There were times though after being in Eastern Turkey for a while we'd end up speaking to each other in an English/Turkish/sign language mash-up![]()
True. Thinking back it was probably grammar rather than pronunciation. (It was the 80s so I may be a bit hazyYambo wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 10:24 pm For me, pronunciation is the easy bit as letters are always pronounced the same - unlike English which is flipping crazy sometimes. As an example, 'Pacific Ocean' has 3 Cs all of which are pronounced differently. In Turkish, the letter C is always pronounced like the J in June or July. Hit and sir both have an i in the middle but are pronounced differently. Turkish has i and ı to cover both pronunciations.
Did you use any of those odd little holes in areas of neatly mown grass by any chance?Skub wrote: Thu Mar 24, 2022 4:23 pm We planted 3 trees in remembrance of 3 family members recently departed. The thought did occur to me. We were using spray weedkiller around the site too and the evil in me suggested drawing a knob on the nearest green would be a great idea.Lutin wrote: Thu Mar 24, 2022 4:38 pmDid you use any of those odd little holes in areas of neatly mown grass by any chance?Skub wrote: Thu Mar 24, 2022 4:23 pm We planted 3 trees in remembrance of 3 family members recently departed.
