Not so. Households have the usual recurrent spends but make additional spends for occasions. Xmas does the opposite to tanking the economy!

And where, exactly, will the extra money come from to create this boost?
People only have a finite amount to spend, so if they spend on one extra thing, they're not spending it somewhere else.

Mate, you spent nearly £50k on a range rover, many people can't afford a £500 shitter. You've lost more on trade ins in the last 5 years than some people would earn..Taipan wrote: Sun Feb 15, 2026 10:55 amLol, I'm in the church mouse low income bubble, but can budget to include the occasional treat!weeksy wrote: Sun Feb 15, 2026 10:48 amMaybe in the RTTL middle class High income bubble. Viewing apparently went really well. Which makes us very happy. We'll wait and see if that turns into an offer. Some people have had pretty weird reasons for rejecting it lately so a positive one is welcome, even if they don't end up buying it.weeksy wrote: Sun Feb 15, 2026 9:10 am Kippers for breakfast.
At hotel not home as we've got a viewing later.
I had scallops last night too. I do love a bit of seafood
The other property in the village that was sort of 'competition' is no longer on the market too, so that can only help. Lets see what comes in the next few days.

Managed to coordinate my kids and their partners to have meal with us for my wife, Son and my birthdays!
They vetoed my suggestion for the Harvester and what I thought was its enticing free salad bar and red devil sauce, in favour of some local Turkish kitchen, but hey ho, is all good!

Proper nice with bread.Taipan wrote: Mon Feb 16, 2026 11:26 am Managed to coordinate my kids and their partners to have meal with us for my wife, Son and my birthdays! They vetoed my suggestion for the Harvester and what I thought was its enticing free salad bar and red devil sauce, in favour of some local Turkish kitchen, but hey ho, is all good!

With Turkish we tend to over-order on the starters and share a main, as the little plates are better, IMO.
(Turkish wine is rank...give it a miss, if offered)

My wife went on our Amazon account today and found strange gifts to a woman in France that she doesn't know.Noggin wrote: Wed Feb 11, 2026 5:18 pm The other day a longstanding internet weirdo* friend asked me for my address (had read stuff in various places and thought I needed a cheer up, I've said to family before, when I stop posting about my life on FB and just share random shit, I'm hiding!!)
Yesterday I remembered to check the post box on the way to work - didn't have time to open and look before work so took the package with me to the shuttle I was doing because I get a minimum of 20 mins at the start point before I have to go pick up passengers
* I have no idea if this friend is actually weird!!! I just called my forum/FB friends my "internet weirdo friends" and it's stuck!!!
Some people have a knack of finding the right stuff for someone they've never actually met!! I do so LOVE my internet weirdo friends (yes, all of you included!) - you've all kept me fighting on for too long, not sure I'd be even half as sane as I am now without you all (not that I'm remotely sane of course!!)
Anyway, I now have an emotional support turtle - he sits on the dash of the bus to keep me smiling! Well I did laugh out loud when I found him in the package!
And a freaking awesome crystal tree![]()
Will spend some time making the branches more open but already looks gorgeous
Internet weirdo friends ROCK, from whichever place/social media/etc - it doesn't matter where we "met" or that we haven't actually met IRL, we're friends and that's what really counts![]()

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Booking and planning holibobs.
Decided to have a mooch around the foothills of the Dolomites at the end of May, for no other reason than they look bloody impressive and we don't mind a bit of a stroll.
Managed to get some reasonable BA flights into Venice, which we'll depart as soon as we get the hire car, then a night in Treviso as it looks nice, then a couple of hotels a bit further up north to do some walking and eating hearty food and drinking the local vino.
I get quite excited.
Edit: Tis done. And on a spreadsheet. And yes, I am a dweeb for creating a spreadsheet.

Ooo - similar. I've just booked a trip to Krakow. I've never been to Poland and I fancy a mooch around the salt mines for starters

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
I can't remember which salt mine I went to in Poland. I went there by train, possibly from Warsaw. It had a cathedral in it. There were two ways down, the tourist route and another route. I suspect the other was more exciting from a rusty technology point of view. And don't buy the souvenir salt, it was about a third grit, which is impressive when you consider it comes from brine from the drainage system.Sunny wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 5:39 pm Ooo - similar. Likely this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wieliczka_Salt_Mine and I would have traveled to it from Krakow.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Got a call from the Gremlinette last night.
"Father! what's the 80's electronica tune that goes 'do-do-da-do-do...'".
I deduced it was 'Only You' by Yazoo.
"Thanks!..."
Me, "Wait. Are you doing a pub quiz and cheating?"
"Nope. It's only cheating if you use Google, not your dad's musical knowledge! BYE!"
Strange moral code.
