A mate of mine was diagnosed with cancer of the spine around 6 months ago. Finished up bed bound, in a wheelchair.
Woke up this morning and I see a text from him, sent at 2.15 am. Hey up wscad , just done half a litre of whiskey in the last 10 mins together with 12 tablets. I’ll finish the bottle in the next half together with another 12 tablets. I’ll see you on the other side .
His son calls me around 10am.... wscad......my dad passed away last night..... he died in his sleep.
Today has not been a good day
That sucks.
Trying not to be insensitive here, but based on what you've said there it might be worth a quick chat with his lad and have him delete his dads text messages or loose his phone
Assuming there will be an inquest that might be considered perverting the course of justice.

True enough.
In which case, assuming his lad doesn't know that he took his own life, then he needs to know.
I'm hoping that lad does know and has chosen not to pass that on to Wscad.

But, as has been said - he thought enough of you to say goodbye. Sad, but a relief for him and whilst not a great text to receive, pretty amazing that you were someone he actually wanted to say goodbye to
Huge hugs. Life deals some shitty hands and generally to people we care about

Was in two mind as to whether to post this, but given the previous...
Went to see my mum yesterday. She's had bladder cancer for the last few years, and earlier this year had a kidney removed. She's now getting pains in her chest and it hurts her to breathe. A recent trip to the hospital ruled out any heart issues, and she's due to see the doctor today. I think we all know that it's the cancer that has spread, and yesterday she told me that if it is, she doesn't want chemo and wants us to agree to help end her suffering if it comes to it. Kind of a tough conversation after a nice roast dinner, but I will do all I can, should the need arise, to make sure she doesn't suffer.

My little issue seems a bit "first world problem" in light of recent posts, so commiserations to those involved.

Dismantled the "Thetford Caprice Mk3" cooker in daughter's camper van for the 3rd time, trying to replace the grill thermocouple. Still (for the 3rd time) can't work out how to get to the back of the grill control knob - if I could, it'd be a simple pull old end off, push new end on. So near, so far, so frustrating. Can't find any hepful instructions, tho it must be a common repair. Grrr... 3rd time!!
Might have to get a man in, but they're all busy or don't want to.
Any good? No mention of removing the knob. Page 17

Thanks for that - by coincidence, I found a similar article shortly after I posted, which referred, as yours does, to a much more modern cooker. However, the key detail was that the hob is held down by tiny turrets (need a 5mm socket) which I hadn't even realised were removable. Got it off, but - new thermocouple still hasn't sorted it. Drawing board, on my way....

Today I’ve been shopping in that London and now I’m sat in a Soho boozer pleasantly merry from t’ale.
It’s raining outside so I might as well wander around drunk.
I'd stay in there and drink some more.

Using up my holidays before I lose them at the end of the year, I've read the first 120 pages of Susanna Clarke's Piranesi.

Just walked out of an internal business meeting. First time I've ever done it. Somebody replied to me with a sentence starting, 'Listen!...'
I told her boss that I found her tone offensive and that I was leaving.
I am officially a snowflake.

I've done my 'Driver Training' to work as a transfer driver this winter!!!! Luckily, it seems I was doing things right for the last few years!
I now have CoolBus number 3
Whilst we were talking through 'stuff' (doing driver training, without actually driving - both of us there today have done a few years of transfer driving!) I asked if they have any auto minibuses. He immediately went into panic, asking if I could driver a Manual!! Of course, I can drive a manual, but I'd prefer an auto!! It seems that most of the drivers don't like the autos, so I have one for the winter

Gotta look after it now
First job probably on Friday
Really annoying is that I must have slipped (but not fallen) in the snow recently as my arm is quite grumpy! My kind and gentle physio was quite brutal this afternoon, so I am sat at home, not doing my French homework and with a heat pack on my shoulder!! Early night and up with the snow ploughs to do the homework I think!! LOL

It is a really tough conversation.
I watched from afar as all was done to prolong my grandmothers life and vowed then and there never to allow that to happen. One of my best friends helped care for her mother as she slowly lost the use of her limbs and ability to breathe properly. After her mother died, she and I made a deal similar to above - but for each other. My family are aware of the deal and so is hers. We are just far enough removed from each other to make that a safer option
I do often think it is horrific how much we allow fellow humans to suffer in the name of care. I get why, to a degree. But some of the pain and suffering I've watch in friends and family I would not wish on a sworn enemy.
Like Potter and Wscad's friend, I hope I have the ability to sort things out when I'm ready. I won't choose to go early for no reason, but, especially here and with no family around me, I hope I will make the decision, based on information/diagnosis, before my friend needs to come and help me!!
@gremlin - huge hugs to you. Tough conversation, tough thing to have to do - but she will 100% appreciate it xxx

The last few days have been an orgy of painting walls and ceilings. Some days it was dark and I had forgotten to eat or drink.
The kitchen install was started today, should be finished tomorrow. Still without a bathroom, that'll be another couple of weeks yet.

Prepped a vat of a sort of taginey thing of lamb, chilli, ginger, aubergine and chickpeas. That's the evening meal sorted and 6 portions for the freezer. Worked on my knife skills

In the cooking zone everyone seems to have knives that were hand forged from Unobtainium and tempered in virgin's wee but nobody seems to cook much (apart from Silly Car) or mention knife skills.
Lamb neck fillet used to be cheap.

Today has been a good day. Apart from the inability to get the app onto my phone that is needed for work! Trip to the office tomorrow so they can sort it (apparently it isn't possible unless you use the login of someone who has the app

)
But - damn it kept snowing all last night and all day!! AWESOME amount of snow for the time of year. And another 3 ish days of it!!
I bimbled most of the day - went out to see a friend who is setting up his cafe. Showed him pics of the Monster (pre snow!) - it's his favourite bike of all time, so he was very smiley!
Then met my previously isolating friend. He drove to the valley this morning and almost didn't get back - sooooo much snow, not much clearing, no gritting and LOADS of ill equipped vehicles blocking various stages of the journey!! LOL
All day I've been admiring the snow! So -
The way out of my building
Almost at the snow front
Bit chilly even if it has been mostly cleared of snow!!
The electric defrosting seems to have broken at different points of the path! Oh well!!
Hoooge snow!
Snow front looks a bit grey - but it's still snowing!!
