Remembering Don Hogan Charles, American photographer - the first African-American photographer hired by The New York Times .
Don was born on this day, September the 9th, in 1938.
Don Hogan Charles helped document the civil rights movement in the US and captured iconic imagery of many notable subjects such as Coretta Scott King, John Lennon, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali during his four decades with the Times .
You can read more about his life and see samples of his work in this article published by the NYT following his death .
https://www.nytimes.com/.../don-hogan-charles-dead.html
In more than four decades at The Times, Mr. Charles photographed a wide range of subjects, from local hangouts to celebrities to fashion to the United Nations. But he may be best remembered for the work that earned him early acclaim: his photographs of key moments and figures of the civil rights era.
In 1964, he took a now-famous photograph, for Ebony magazine, of Malcolm X holding a rifle as he peered out of the window of his Queens home. In 1968, for The Times, he photographed Coretta Scott King, her gaze fixed in the distance, at the funeral of her husband, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"I'm safe, I'm with the firemen". The last message from William G. Biggart, the only professional news photographer to be killed as a result of the collapse of the World Trade Centre on September 11th, 2001 - 23 years ago today Bill ran home, grabbed three cameras (two film, one digital) and began heading toward the WTC. Walking and shooting as he went, he moved quickly downtown toward the smoke and flames.
As his pictures indicate, Bill was eventually shooting straight up at the burning buildings. He was not far from the first tower when it fell. After being overtaken by the dust cloud, he photographed the devastation all around him. Wendy, his wife, reached Bill on his cell phone shortly after the first tower fell. He told her not to worry, he would meet her in 20 minutes at his studio. “I’m safe,” he assured her, “I’m with the firemen.” It was the last time they ever spoke.
About 20 minutes later, the second tower collapsed. Bill’s body was found in the rubble four days later. His camera equipment was damaged, but his friend and fellow photographer Chip East was able to extract the films and flash card, which contained Bill’s final images. The last photograph was time-stamped at 10:28:24, seconds before the second tower collapsed.
