Mercedes break the 24hr EV distance record by nearly 1000 miles. They also drove the equivalent to all the way around the world in less than 8 days.

That average speed is talking about when it's in motion. Including stopping for charging it's only ~140mph :(

No fires reported.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new- ... nce-record
Mercedes-AMG’s new high performance GT XX concept – the recently revealed super-saloon that previews the next AMG GT 4-door coupé – has set a new electric car distance record having travelled 3405 miles in 24 hours.

The new record, which was independently verified, was set at the Nardò test track in Italy where the concept achieved a claimed average speed of 186mph and only stopped to rapid charge at up to 900kW.

It beats the previous record of 2461 miles set by the XPeng P7 earlier this month. Previous record attempts include the 2451 miles achieved by the Xiaomi YU7 Max and the 2310 miles recorded by the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Even with £12k off the Q4, still an expensive EV? Not sure how the likes of Audi/ BMW/ Merc are selling EV's at their prices?

We've started looking at replacing the wife's aging E220 Convertible. She'd like a SUV style car and I'm tempted to go EV to save her fuel costs. Looked at the Ford Explorer and Capri, the Renault Scenic e-tech, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Tavascan. All of those claim to have a 300+ mile range. Only sat in them though, no test drives yet.

I didn't think any of them seemed nasty, all pretty pleasant to sit in, Cupra was funky.

Then I got thinking about maybe, as the EV market is still unpredictable and all over the place, that we may just lease one for a couple of years, rather than buy and take the huge depreciation. And tech is moving so quickly, especially range wise that, like with phones and laptops etc, as soon as you buy one, it's out of date. Obviously getting a used one is an option as well, but a lot of the models are still so new and peoples PCP's etc haven't finished yet to allow them onto the used market.

Neither are we, which is why the prices are all over the place

Gotta remember ICE cars have over 100 years of supply and production development behind them. Even a supercar V8 only costs the OEM a few hundred quid/low thousands to make.

In many ways EVs are alot simpler. It's all just new.

I've been wondering about an electric 'Q' Audi but, when you can get a s/h 3-4k miles Q8 e-tron 55 for £50k there's absolutely no way I'm buying anything new! (Audi that is...the missus may find herself in a brand new, bright yellow Renault 5  ).

Just reading some more about this and seeing how they charge at crazy high powers, about 3 times the power of the highest spec chargers currently out there in the wild.

I'm stuck by this photo though. I clearly remember lots of people saying "Oh you'll never get more than 50kW in a cable a normal person can lift" yet here's a perfectly normal cable transferring >900kW

Most of the EVs that claim to have 300+ mile range, dont unless you play around with charge levels and its in summer etc as discussed in the range anxiety thread. But the reality is, for most daily high mileage drivers, you dont do 250+ miles without a break, no matter what car you're in, and most get enough charge in during that break to complete their journey. For the rest of the EV drivers who don't do big daily mileages charging and range simply isn't an issue. Whatever model you go for, do plenty of research on its charge and range first as the on paper side of things is often very misleading..

As for fuel savings, EVs are crazy cheap. Theres hardly any servicing costs compared to an ICE obvs and get on the right tarrif, something like Octopus intelligent and you can get charge rates at like 7p per kwh. Plus whilst you're on that overnight tarriff you can schedule things like your washing machine etc to be on at that rate too.

I got my EV in May and use it more than I ever did compared to my old car and the wifes Mini is pretty much parked up at weekends now. So far i've spent a miserly £21 on charging it. I should dig out the paperwork and see what mileage I bought it at to give that some credence obvs, but I was certainly spending a lot more on my diesel rangey and I used it a lot less. The marketing of EVS is a little bit misleading IMO, but the win is still there!

Electric aeroplane projects are talking about 1MW chargers which are available for charging lorries in scandanavia (IIRC).
The aim is to be able to recharge the batteries in the length of time it takes to turn around a flight, passengers & baggage off, clean the cabin, passengers and baggage on in circa 40 mins.

I'd be far more convinced aircraft can get 1MW or even 10MW chargers soon, simply 'cause you don't have to let the public loose with them!

Same with conventional refuelling of aircraft right? No-one is doing pressurised refuelling of cars for example ('cept LPG of course).

yeah, the super chargers that we have now give enough oomph to vaporise a toe nail so they've got protections built in making sure that a proper handshake is made before bunging all that power into the car.

I got thoroughly told off by my Mum's EV Mini at a charger. I didn't quite drive it far enough forward into the space, so I just jumped into the driver's seat at put it in D to eek forward a smidge, while it was still plugged in.

Bad idea :D Dashboard instantly lit up red, it stopped charging and went into sulk mode and the charger itself gave me a 5 minute time out before I could even unplug the car. :obscene-birdiedoublered: Just had to sit there on the naughty step before I could do anything at all.

I think that might be considered somewhat sensitive

Edit: it might be better to think of all the costs and OEM has and then how they have to make all their money on selling cars and servicing. It's not just the margin on the cost of the car you have to make, but all the other back office stuff and not to mention guys like me! Me and my work cost the OEM millions yet I don't sell anything to anyone.

The margins on cars etc. sold to the public have to pay for all that.....so you might be surprised how cheap it can be to build a car.

We chatted to a salesman for the best part of an hour about the Q4 and all the different options, and then he gave us the keys to a used 45 quarto and told us to make sure we thrashed it and had fun :banana-dance:

So we did.

We're very very impressed. Without the car binging and nagging you about speeding the wife would be banned in no time. She was doing silly speeds without realizing 🤣🤣,
When he said signing up for a September delivery could be at approx £12k below list price it makes it very tempting.

We went to have a look at Volvo because we've had a v40 for 7 years. The ex30 is fucking awful inside, and the electric xc40 very meh, so we were in and out in 15 mins.

Just around the corner is VW and Cupra, the Born is very funky inside and out and actually looks like a hot hatch. It was too late in the day to drive one so we may go back at some point.

The missus has a Q4 45, just coming up to the end of its second year and 30k miles. Leased mind you, not bought, but if anyone has any questions about them...

The running costs of an EV are crazily low*. Something that didn’t really click with me until I got one. The government will find a way to monetise it at some point, but for the moment I’ll take it.

*assuming you can charge at home.

I did some rough guestimate fag packet sums based on that Merc ^^^ story up there.

If they did 186mph average while on the move, as they claim, that means they were stationary about 25% of the time. So assume they were charging that whole stationary time at 900kW that works out at the equivalent of about 130 gallons of petrol total, energy wise. So that car did 3400 miles at an average of 186mph doing just over 25 mpg the whole time!

25mpg ain't all that of course, but it is when you set your cruise control to 186

BTW for anyone wondering, the 24 hour distance record for an ICE is 3000 miles (400 miles less than this EV), also held by Mercedes. Hasn't been contested for a while though. :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Indeed.

The initial outlay, the depreciation over an ICE car and the other running costs (less to service outweighed by quicker tyre wear, etc.) means it's not so black and white.

Buying 2nd hand makes a big difference tho'

Mmm, it’s fairly black and white in my particular circumstances. Yes, I’ve bought it, but on a PCP so depreciation is locked in. Servicing is included and it’s interest free. The savings on fuel mean I get a new car for effectively what I was paying for fuel on the last car. And that’s before you factor in the tax savings of buying an EV through the business. The main cost seems to be tyres which it looks to be using for fun!
