I don't think I know enough to explain the imposter effect.

Some of you lot on here are good proof of that, along with my parents who are in their 80's and just believe every single thing that they are told by the media.
Youre talking about Screw'd, right? :eh:

I had to explain the flip side aspect to it to a friend. That's where someone who knows how to do something assumes that everyone else knows how to do it. We've probably all that conversation with someone where you're telling them how to do something you find easy (bleed the brakes, check the tire pressure or oil level etc) & it suddenly dawns on you that not only do they not own any tools, but if they actually had a tool box, they would require instruction & close supervision on how to open it...

The above is not in itself a valid example of the Dunning Kruger effect.

Yes is it, but you're more familiar with the other side of the coin where people think they are smarter than they actually are.

US media (except Fox) now acting like Elon Musk doesn't even exist. They spent the last year talking about him every fucking day up until a week ago... Latest drop shows Jack Dorsey lied under oath to Congress.

I don't understand the hatred of Musk before there's been any time to judge his actions. Almost immediately the moaning and calls to boycott started, people are wanting it to fail.
It all looks like an orchestrated move by political groups because he said he wants a level playing field, it was too sudden to be much else.

Twitter just seems to be boohoo about whose version of free speech is the default today.

I thought the flip side would be where competent people actually realise their failings and don't make out that they know everything.
I just assume that people who say they know everything about a big subject are just bullshitters.

Apparently the amount of hate speech on Twitter has dropped since Musk arrived

Latest news is Elton John has flounced.

I thought he wanted to level the playing field so that you could be anywhere on it: left, right, authoritarian, libertarian (or any workable combination) rather that all sliding down to the authoritarian left corner.

According to peer reviewed studies and Twitter's own internal 2021 study, Twitter algorithms didn't discriminate against right wing posts, in fact by several measures they actually did 'better'. I suspect it's like the BBC. How far left or right it looks depends which side you're looking from, whether you think you're part of a majority group, but aren't and whether you regard anything that disagrees with you as 'bias'.

Whenever I take one of those political compass questionnaires I usually end up near the middle left/right and down towards the libertarian side of the libertarian/authoritarian divide. So my unbiased opinion, from the centre, is that Twitter was biased to the left. My biased opinion, looking from the libertarian side is, as you might expect, that Twitter was authoritarian biased.

The howls of protest from the left about Musk levelling the playing field tells its own story.

N.B. The BBC IS left biased. It's the broadcasting wing of The Guardian which is unashamedly left biased. The Guardian is a privately owned entity, it's entitled to be as biased as it likes, the BBC is publicly funded, it's supposed to be neutral.

The Beeb isn't Left at all (as a definite leftie, accidental Marxist I can confirm that, as I find it often Right). If anything it's the worst kind of after-you-oh-do-excuse-me-church-of-england apologetic news-service because it gives far-left, left, centrist, right and far-right equal weighting because yes that's obviously the best way to have a rounded discussion. So it is often equally left, right and central at the same time but most typically really aggravating.

Musk suddenly appearing as the arbiter of what-is-centrist just appeases a slightly different small group who need Twitter to validate their views, because apparently we all want to appear moderate and be told stuff we agree with by other self proclaimed moderates.

Maybe the algorithms didn't discriminate but it is choices employees made that are being questioned.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It was Musk claiming that algorithmic bias affected right wing political candidates more negatively. The studies and Twitter's own analyses showed that right wing content actually performed better - algorithms or humans makes no difference - they looked at outcomes. Again 'evil is in the eye of the beholder'.

Personally I think there's only one thing wrong with Twitter....people can access it. Sorry, two things...others, who should know better, think that 'trending on Twitter' = 'the people have spoken' and one thing it ain't is a ballot box. A soap box, yes.
