Few more miles on the RE and its a joy. Really enjoying life in the steady lane. Lovely ride yesterday and today in sunshine .

Nantwich lake was my first stop, cup of tea, ducks and swan's and lot's of people enjoying summer's end.

On to Audlem, Market Drayton and an excellent canal side pub, the Wharf at Goldstone, middle of nowhere. Plenty of Sunday lunches inside but plenty of outside seating for the poor folk.

I've also just fitted a little digital rpm display so will see if its worth leaving on, on my next jaunt. Max rpm on these is 5250 and 27 bhp with max torque at 4k. Yesterday I broke the 70mph and still climbing , very slowly. Seems happiest around 55/60 tbf.

That's the factory quoted figure. It's probably engine rather than rear wheel.

Mines got a loud pipe, PCV and a K&N, so is LOADS faster than stock. There's not a hope in hell that it makes anywhere near 30bhp tho'

It rides like a very torquey 125 that you don't need to change gears very often.

An XR600 only makes about 30bhp, Honda claim 44 (I think).
Not that there's anything wrong with how much power the Enfield makes, I just wish manufacturers were more honest, and buyers were less bothered by how much bhp a bike makes (says the man with a 143bhp bike that he loves to brag about)

I've just been googling, a good, stock 500 EFI will make 22bhp at the rear wheel.

There's load of things you can do to make them fasterer. (https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycl ... EFI-Models)

But there's no need, it's more enjoyable just bimbling along looking cool

Though to be fair, a loud pipe really does improve the whole experience, mine is hilariously loud. When I'm tootling around the countryside I always give it handful passing pub beer gardens and everyone looks.

I reckon 20bhp would make a good bimbler. Getting on 70mph tops. They just don't get there very quick.

The other week I was thinking of upping the gearing, but it don't need it. 1,2 and 3 are very short but 4 and 5 stretch it out nicely. Reckon upping would struggle in top. Also, it's a bit clunky on gear changes , might get better with miles.

That's a lovely pub - I used to cycle down the canal to it. Feels like it's fifty miles from anywhere.

I do get folk asking how old it is, then they spot the plate. I just say it's the last of the 500s. Might get a dodgy plate, it's about time I committed another crime of the century.

I bought a cheap printed tin plate for my MY14 (not a proper pressed one), stuck on with double sided tape and never had a problem with the Five-O... my MOT tester insists I put the proper plate back on for the test, but lets me off with the loud pipe (probably because I bought the bike off him with the pipe fitted).

I must admit,if I didn't have my XT600 I'd be looking at Himalayan or similar for chugging around the local back roads.
