Why is the final drive and shaft enclosure not black?

I did wonder when the list said 'Drivetrain, black'. :hmmm:

Dunno? From what I've seen it's a black engine and silver drive.....

Welcome to BMW ownership.

Both my K12 and 1150GS are exactly the same.

Probably had the rear bearing go and the rear drive unit exchanged as a whole?

I had a browse last night, only the engine and trans should be black - shaft should be silver. Don't ask me why though :D

Which means the swingarm and final drive have been replaced at some point. I highly doubt it came from the factory like that.

I've registered but still waiting approval by a mod, seems a bit quiet on there but lots of good info. 👍🏻

Apparently they did. Did an extensive browse last night and all with the black engine and trans have a silver shaft housing?

I assume you mean R1100Ss when you say "all".

The Rockster also had the black engine and drivetrain, bit it's entirely black. IIRC some GSs had it too, again, entirely black.

My GS is all back.

Black engine, black cardan/FD, black body work... Gun metal frame. It's a special edition 'triple black'.

It's a completely different generation of bike so has no bearing on this thread at all.

Yeah sorry, R1100S specific. From my memory my Rockster was all black too.

I think my 2003 GS was black engine and not black 'drive shaft'/fd.
