The post-2002 ones had more grunt and the engines were quieter they reckon.
I quite liked it after a few tweaks - smaller front cog, fast action throttle. Never got round to changing the front MC but it needed it.
I loved the engine. The 1050 was better in every way but that was definitely not a 90s bike

Rode the Speed Triple the other day - and it started to misfire like a bastard - and felt like one cylinder wasn't fully working. The backfiring suggested that petrol was igniting is the end can. The locals weren't impressed.
On taking advice from people who know it was suggested:
a) plugs
b) carbs / pilot jets
c) coils
d) It's an old triumph - what do expect
Body work off - plugs out (the T300 has very narrow plug channels - so it took two goes on Amazon to get something that fitted). No 1 plug (on the left, lowest position when on side stand) came out looking tile it had been swimming in the sump and was completely loose - as in less than hand tight. No 2 (middle) was slightly better in terms of oil but still just below hand tight.. No 3 was a clean as a whistle and torqued properly
Conclusion: Cam seal has gone - possible just the ones around the plug channels - but if you are going to do it, put in new around.
Triumph want 109.60 for the seals
Sprint Manufacturing wanted considerably less

Got a link to that spark plug socket? I think I'll have the plugs out in mine as I have some backfiring on the sprint

The plug channels fill with oil because the cam cover seal leaks at the o shaped seals around the plugs. This caused the issue with mine because it was screwed in much / at all - so the plug was dripping in oil.
Stick coils can also help
I was worried that it was going to be a carb issue - and getting the carbs out seems to be universally seen as a complete bitch!

Cheers @Mr Moofo , I've had a good read of that site and also been on a few FB forums. My carbs were fettled by someone who knows what they're doing last year and the knackered pilot jets replaced so I'm inclined to think my issues are on the ignition side. Stick coils might happen but mines a shed so not sure I can justify the cost. Hoping the plugs will tell me which pot is playing up and then I can play swap the coils to see if that is the problem.

I had an M reg Tiger 900. That was a brilliant bike. Dropping the yokes by 20mm and putting 20mm spacers on top of the springs in the non-adjustable forks made a *huge* difference to the ponderous handling. It would have made a great tourer, massive tank and supremely comfy.
