The best and safest solution is to not use a bike at all and go everywhere in a premium European saloon car.

He swears by military surplus boots.
I have worn Alpinestars SMX Plus boots for years which are comfortable on the bike and the Goretex ones completely waterproof in biblical rain. When i started the instructor gig there was lots of walking about on training pads for CBT and Mod training and the thin soles on Astars boots designed for feel on the bike are totally useless for that purpose.

I tried some walking boots but always felt unprotected while riding so i followed the herd of all the other instructors and went down the Altberg military boot route. I now wear Altberg Defender British Army issue boots that have a nice thick sole for pad work, nice high ankle protection and good sturdy feel. I cover them regularly in good polish and so far in the last year they havent let a drop of water in no matter the thunderstorms i had ridden in. I havent crashed in them but i think they will offer some decent protection.

For comparison i have crashed in the Alpinestars boots and the way i landed was head first and both my feet then slapped down hard followed by a long slide. My ankle armour stood up to it well with some swelling but nothing broken. All the armour was scraped and the toe slider ripped off but the boots are still useable

I now pretty much only wear the Alpinestars boots if i have full leathers on, the rest of the time in textiles or kevlar jeans its the Altbergs

Riding is fine, it's the starting which is the problem :D
Even though I tucked in my laces, I was still scared they'd catch on something and make me fall off when I stopped!!
Somehow I think you'd manage that in wellies !!

I have a pair of TCX trainer boots I bought, but shortly after I bought these and they are better in pretty much every way bar looks. They are more comfy, more protective and cooler to wear on and off the bike. When they wear out I'll get another pair.

The trainers are OK but I got WP ones which makes them hot off the bike. They also aren't as protective before you add in the fact they only come to the ankle.

With bike boots I remember a mate who had his ankle fucked in a bike crash and his surgeon said knees are fairly easy to sort but ankles are way more complicated. He ended up having his fused.

Shame they start at a 6.5, I've only got little feet :( :(

My physio up here crashed a paraglider into a rockface, three years later (this May) he had his ankle fused after spending that time trying to find an alternative solution :( Definitely protect the ankle!!

It's a bit like people saying they won't wear wrist protection when snowboarding because it just moves the break up the arm - I'd much prefer to break a bigger bone or just not a 'joint'!!! But ankles and wrists are way complicated to fix :( :(

Plus it takes a lot more force to break your arm bone than it does to break your wrist !

Altberg Hoggs for me for the last 15 years, still going strong, still waterproof, and still all day comfortable to walk in!

And jolly handy. If I felt I had to wear proper boots every single time I rode a motorcycle I'd probably ride a motorcycle much less frequently.
