Oh, and in the party political Punch and Judy stuff, people seem to forget what government is actually for. What do we, the tax payer, the voter actually pay them to do? If your list of expectations doesn't include the word 'protect' you may want to consider defunding the armed forces, the police and the NHS.
Whether the lockdown was the 'best' response doesn't really matter if they thought they were doing their job and did it for the right reasons. Ditto the furlough. You can only hope that next time some things have been learned.

Rellie is a retired GP. I can remember him sitting with a massive folder of 'pandemic' planning stuff probably over 15 years ago.Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 3:58 pm
My point about Exercise Alice was really that Matt Hancock stood up and said basically 'We're winging it here, the planning was for an influenza, so we're actually doing marvellously'. It wasn't until 2021 that they admitted that the exercise had taken place in 2016 and allowed a redacted version out into the wild. Even that showed that some major recommendations were ignored. I understand that you can't act on every modelling exercise but to claim it was a surprise and that's why the PPE stocks were wrong (and out of date in some cases with some pretty back of the fag packet ideas on how to distribute it) was, at best, economical with the truth. (They've modelled other stuff like ebola too, a coronavirus was just one of the exercises).
pretty good at those, they happen every year.

By appointing people that aren't thick as shit and actually care about their job and can make good decisions based on life experiences rather than referring to their degree in being a cunt for every fucking decision they make!

If that's what you think happened then there's little point discussing it.
Whether the government did well or badly we can debate all night. But they did use the most knowledgeable people on the planet (as well as some not )
Thinking anything else, basically just means you feel the government let people die just out of stupidity.
Personally I don't believe that.
In my opinion, decisions around this stuff were incredibly hard. Letting person A die saved person B. But if you let person B die, the A and C and maybe D then die. But E survived.

They didn;t let peope die out of stupidity, they let people die out of their pure incompentence to realise the world that they live in!weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 8:02 pmThinking anything else, basically just means you feel the government let people die just out of stupidity.

They continued to proceed to make their own means better through a pandemic and we all just followed what ever they said, well most of the population at least!

That totaly fucked my mental health seeing how easy we as a nation can be controlled and i am still bouncing back from it!
I think we as a nation, not just England, all the other parts of of the UK and Ireland need to think hard and fast as to who we trust with running our precious isles in such times!

Cast your mind back to the very start of things. Covid hadn't properly arrived in the UK but was rampant in Italy, the news was full of Italian medics urging countries to lock down. It was also in the news that the virus seemed to be affecting the sick and elderly, so what does the UK do? Fuck all. A cynical person might think Boris and his chums were trying to reduce the countries tax burden by doing nothing.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 8:02 pm

Re: Here we go again...
Covid was a new(ish) disease. It killed old people, vulnerable people and relatively few fit, healthy young people. That's what most diseases do, get over it. For some people it was very nasty indeed, for others it was no worse than a cold. If you wait a bit another pandemic will arrive, and it may be quite mild, or it may kill 75% of the victims, either way governments and the WHO will have very little impact on the outcome. C'est la vie (et mort).

Typically speaking in that case, the small percentage who did pass, even when you consider the period where all deaths were marked as covid, then it doesn't even pass the mark for being a pandemic, perhaps an epidemic?

So publicly he did something, then sat out the back having a drink and laughing at the stupidity of it all.
3* I say this all the time to people, be careful who you moan to, because if you moan to a person who can make big changes with the stroke of a pen then he might just make big changes.
The bit that was clear mismanagement (aside from outrageous mismanagement of his staff) was furlough free money and not stamping on the Bank of England for their suicidal monetary policy. It was always going to lead to financial crisis and was obvious to anyone.
1* ahh so you have experience with privileged types who think they don't have to do anything they don't want to. You have my sympathy, but please understand. These people are privileged because of the families they were born into. They are not more intelligent than the average person. They've just been brought up to think they are better than all the plebs "The rules don't apply to me".
2* So not at all connected to all the other countries invoking a lockdown?
3* If we all moan to Richie about the corruption in the government, he'll start sacking and jailing MPs ? Well this is good news. Traditionally 'moaning' about dishonourable MP's lead to being ignored......

Re: Here we go again...
The first lockdown was an understandable response to a largely unknown risk. But given the mounting evidence against the need for another lockdown, the second lockdown was inexcusable. It has inflicted huge permanent damage to a young generation, the already struggling NHS, the economy, ...

You mentioned pupil attainment in an earlier post.
From recollection of what I heard at the time, about half of kids were in school for LD2.

Has Bozo finally realised that the game is well and truly up? - Boris Johnson sends last-ditch letter to Partygate inquiry
I doubt that he'll admit to his transgressions, so who's he grassing up?
Just when you thought it couldn't get even more interesting...
Boris Johnson has submitted a last-ditch letter to the MPs investigating whether he misled Parliament over lockdown parties, as they prepare to publish their findings.
The privileges committee said it was "dealing with" submissions received from the former PM at 23:57 on Monday.
The committee is set to publish its conclusions this week, but is unlikely to do so on Wednesday, as expected.
I doubt that he'll admit to his transgressions, so who's he grassing up?

Re: Here we go again...
Guilty as charged - Boris Johnson faced 90-day suspension for deliberately misleading MPs over Partygate
If you’re just joining us, here’s what we've learned from the Privileges Committee report so far:
Boris Johnson committed "repeated contempts" of Parliament
It recommended a 90-day suspension which would have paved the way for a by-election
Johnson committed further contempts in undermining the democratic processes of the Commons
He was "deliberately disingenuous when he tried to reinterpret his statements to the House to avoid their plain meaning and reframe the clear impression he intended to give"
His resignation statement breached confidentiality requirements by criticising the committee's provisional findings
MPs considered whether it should have recommended expelling Johnson from the Commons entirely

He had an 80 seat majority to put into action something which the left leaning civil service kicked up a stink over...he had a slice of cake whilst at work, with people he works with, just like the Police, Fire Service etc did.......witch hunt.

Re: Here we go again...
Not what actually did the damage. The report criticises him and they would have suspended him (unanimously on a committee with a majority of his own party on) for:
1. Deliberately misleading the Commons.
2. Deliberately misleading the privileges committee.
3. Breaching confidence (by leaking part of the report in advance).
4. “Impugning” the committee, and thus parliamentary processes.
5. Complicity in a “campaign of abuse and attempted intimidation of the committee”.
Basically, lying and trashing parliamentary procedures, not 'the cake'.
