Actually what I'd do is hang on to the Trident as it's a much nicer looking bike than the MT09 and fast enough, spend the money on track days and pies.

I wouldn't - straight out of the crate it will be a much better bike, and you shouldn't need to fanny about swapping shocks and fork internals. It also looks a lot better than the base models. If there was a magic wand to wave that fixed the looks of the headlight I'd be queueing up for an MT-09 SP. I wouldn't be looking at the base models, but that's just me.

Just had a quick Google. The black one looks a million times better than the grey one.

What he said! Get ti bought. Don't buy one and start poncing around with getting the suspension done, get the ohlins one and enjoy it as soon as you turn the key. They are awesome bikes and widely acknowledged for being so. All bikes are ugly to someone and all bikes are gorgeous to others. Once you're hearing the CP3 howl as your flicking through the bends you wont give a crap either way!

LOL in the way everyone told him it was ugly and the cheaper one was just as good

I'm easily put off with these types of things, and a few people saying save my money and get the base model gets me mulling over the decision.

Well FWIW the XSR was a lot better once I'd thrown a £400 shock and a £200 rebuild/spring at it.. But it depends on what you want.

Me, i'd buy the SP because it has the Ohlins, they're 'better' and prettier, whether you need better or not, who knows, who can say... but if you can afford it... i'm saying Ohling

If you get the SP it'll have a higher resale value.

Doesnt the SP only have an ohlins at the back? Pretty sure it's KYB at the front.
Imo that's not worth £2k difference.
Most importantly, is it a road bike or a track bike.
Didnt CC buy an early SP and berated the suspension anyway!
If the SP came with a super-duper electronics package/carbon wheels and a blowjob after every ride, fine, but it's just got what most of us fit at a premium price.

As a GSXS owner (It's a budget Suzuki with a top box and a 'bland' TM IL4) and previous 690 owner (where are the other cylinders/has it blown up yet) I must have thick skin as it wouldn't change my mind

Depends really. If I had the money and I wanted the SP then that's what I'd buy, bollocks to anyone else. It does have posh Ohlins and being an SP will always be worth more as Yorick says.

On the flip side I'm a cheap bastard and if I rode the standard and liked it I'd save my cash even if I budgeted in £1k to get the suspension sorted. But I like top boxes so I'd not listen to me

Get what you like and enjoy it. Other people don't know what you want or like. Pissing on other folk's chips is a favourite pastime on here,but there's no harm meant,nor should you base your opinion on that! Sometimes we don't even realise we are doing it.

That's one fugly motorbike.the other month I was wondering about chopping in my Street Triple & watched a couple of videos on YT, one on the MT09,the other on the BMW RnineT Urban GS. Whilst I was watching one of the video's one of my mates called in for a brew & he also commented on what a gopping looking bike the MT09 was.The thing is though,if I really wanted a specific bike & other people said it was ugly,I would still buy it because it's the bike I want.
It's your money & if that bike ticks the box's then buy it.

Ignore the old men who don't know how to have fun anymore, get the SP it looks much better and has the better suspension. One day you'll be old like this lot and counting the pennies pretending the Lidl brand is just as nice as the more expensive ones and why buy labelled anything as the non branded stuff is just as good, don't become them

I'd make the point that the base MT-09 has a list price of £8,999, compared to the SP's list of £10,202, so the difference isn't £2k, it's £1.2k. On that basis I'd say that the extra cost is worth it for the uprated suspension, cruise control and other little extras like a more comfy seat and better looks. In particular the Ohlins shock has the all important remote preload adjuster (this costs at least £200 extra when specifying it on a new shock) and the top of the line KYB forks have high/low speed compression adjustment and DLC coating of the fork tubes. Fit all that stuff to the base model and you'll be more than £1,200 out of pocket.
