Hmmm they are very regimented in the way tuition is delivered. Albeit not with extreme prejudice.


Actually, jesting apart, some of them can be tediously serious.

A new member of staff at MSF HQ was introduced in the instructor magazine, with a cheesy pic of them sat on a bike, bike on its stand. Next issue included a letter complaining that they were not wearing full gear and helmet ...

I don't disagree.

But it doesn't follow that classroom training isn't enjoyable! It depends how it's been put together. It can be quite challenging and engaging... IF it's put together well.

As I also previously said, most motorcycle training draws on the teaching techniques of the 1950s.

Don't laugh. An instructor of my acquaintance was given a bollocking by the DSA for demonstrating the controls for CBT students whilst sat on the machine. "You should be wearing full kit whenever sat on the bike"... "but I'm only showing them how to turn the effing ignition on"... "irrelevant, every time you sit on the machine you must be wearing a helmet, fully secured, and gloves."

You must wear:

a motorcycle helmet that meets British safety standards (unless you’re Sikh and wearing a turban) - check if the training school will provide one
motorcycle boots or other sturdy footwear that supports and protects your ankles
textile or leather motorcycle trousers or heavy denim trousers
a textile or leather motorcycle jacket or a heavy denim jacket with several layers underneath
motorcycle gloves
Your course can be stopped and you can be charged to take it again if you do not wear suitable clothing.


Note that Spin said 'DSA', so probably some while ago

Edit: when the RPMT came in and I was considering joining the rule was 'must wear hi-viz' - but they didn't specify 'what'. So I'd found a nice black (with silver retroreflective stripes) waistcoat that would have matched my gear. Technically, for 'professional' use it should have been to BS471 - but I wasn't.

He was wearing jacket, trews and boots, since he would be doing a riding demo later.

There was a debate about how you could talk to the trainees whilst wearing a full face helmet. (Flips had only just appeared).

They were also hideously uncomfortable... on me!
