The same will go for most of those buying the Trek ...
I want a E-MTB at some point, but id want full power, what's the point in an 1/2 arsed one.

also in regards to range, the further the better (I think) but like said else where in this thread, maybe just get a spare battery to carry.

^^^ This.

The Trek Fuel EX-e is not a game changer, it's a halfway-house competitive response to other similar halfway-house bikes already on the market.

I don't often use EMTB or turbo modes on my Whyte because I find them a bit too powerful on anything other than the steepest hill. When I'm out for my morning 'commute' to WFH I want my heart rate raised and I want to get in as many laps of my local trails as I can fit in.

In reality, a half fat eMTB would be perfect for me most of the time, and 7kg lighter !!

It depends why you are riding - whether it is for fitness, thrills, hanging out with mates, getting away from work / other stress etc.
Or a mixture of all of them.
I fully understand why Couchy rides (unrestricted ) Eebs - because it is light weight motocross , easy to access etc.
I can understand why some of my bunch use Eebs - essentially they don't want to pedal up hills anymore. But then they complain that us Amish bike riders don't ride fast enough / far enough , so off they go into their own clique.
I can see why oldies, who physically don't have the strength would eeb.
And I can fully understand if you ride Surrey Hills why you would want an electric bike ( by Santa Cruz).

I MTB because of the social side , trying to get better or faster, and fundamentally because I used to be really unfit and became diabetic. I am not now - so cycling up hills and grinding it out is cathartic - and reminds me why I am doing it.

It doesn't mean it won't change - there will be a day when I do find a hill on the SD that I can't ride, or get fed up of being last if we go to the Surrey Hills, then I will go out and buy an bike.

But it will be a full power one ...
I just think ebike lite is a marketing man's attempt at market segementation.

Why ride a 50cc motocross bike if you can handle a 250 ? The 250 is heavier , less agile but faster , right?

You can always turn the boost down on the full fat one - but you can't dial it up on the council estate spec one ...

As Ming says , I would go big (enduro) travel , wait until geo is sorted - as one day 62 HA will be consider plain stupid, and full fat.

The lightweight ebikes are interesting, I like my derestricted ebike for the going as fast as I can chasing times, in the right place it's as much of an adrenalin hit as a motorbike on a race track and the huge plus is I can do that within 15mins of home by riding it there.
But for just riding it's little different to a normal bike as my fitness is fine for a bike ride, I do prefer how a lighter bike feels though. There's a but here and my knee means I can't grind out lower gears putting lots of stress through it so uphill I want help or I walk. I'd like to try the new lighter trek as it's not as low powered as the Spesh SL and with 50nm it's something like the middle modes on my full power one. Whether I could justify the £6k start price is debatable as I'm happy with the bikes I have but a demo won't hurt
