Around 1980, the guy in the local licensing office offered me a replacement number, so I wouldn’t be driving around the British mainland with a Northern Ireland plate.Skub wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 4:22 pmIn certain areas over here that number plate may cause the owner some bother.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 2:48 pm
My dad had a Ford Zodiac Mk4 where the filler cap was in the centre of the rear panel, hidden behind the number plate, so it didn't matter which side the pump was on.

If there’s a pump not being used I’ll go by those waiting and use it car or bike, mostly those waiting want a pump on the side of their filler cap. Sometimes they don’t want to pass a car filling to get to the empty pump. Meh if they want to sit and wait it’s their choice

I am not under 50...but used to use one of those on recoverys...picked up a young copper, his mrs and baby one bank holiday in a renault 16 with a duff alternator...they decided to finish their journey to cornwall......on the way down the m5 the whole plot started swinging.....i accelerated gently as prescribed....at 65 the plot was making progress at 90 degrees to the lane markings ....never seen a motorway get very quiet so quickly....Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 2:48 pmMy dad had a Ford Zodiac Mk4 where the filler cap was in the centre of the rear panel, hidden behind the number plate, so it didn't matter which side the pump was on.

I think the weight of the ford saved us.....
The trailer had a flat in the n/s rear..which i could not see from the towing car. Unfortunately the lug nuts were turning with the studs so i had to cut two off ......
Always usefull having spare knickers in the tool kit.

My dad only had the Zephyr V6!

Didn't the Zephyr have the V4 like the Corsair, Dad's Zodiac had the 3 litre Essex V6, it was an E reg (so probably 1967), we had it in 1977ish, it was the same colour as the one in the picture but the paint was flaking, Dad was a taxi driver and we lived in a council house, he got stopped by the Police, got away with a warning and decided it was time to pass his driving license. This was after smuggling caravans to Spain. The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 9:32 pmOoooo Zodiac, you were posh.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 2:48 pm

Re: Do you push in at petrol stations?
There was a 2.5l V6, and Dad was very proud of it. I remember going to pick it up. It seemed huge after the old Popular. I don't think they were very common. If I remember right it was a pale metallic green. I am not sure how he sneaked it past my Mum, as she kept him on a tight leash when it came to spending cash. Finally got nicked from Maidstone railway station.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 10:24 pmDidn't the Zephyr have the V4 like the Corsair, Dad's Zodiac had the 3 litre Essex V6, it was an E reg (so probably 1967), we had it in 1977ish, it was the same colour as the one in the picture but the paint was flaking, Dad was a taxi driver and we lived in a council house, he got stopped by the Police, got away with a warning and decided it was time to pass his driving license. We lived in a council house in Mitcham, but Dad worked as a fingerprint expert for the Met, so he'd passed his test then done courses at Hendon - he actually had a licence to drive a police vehicle displaying flashing lights, if I remember right
