Re: Re5 Suzuki rotary project bike
Rotary engines, full of pingfuckits!
Cant remember if the RE5 had 2 piece tip seals or single. Get some 2 piece if you can!
Most probably the side plates have wear and the motor will be a very nice paper weight.
As a piece of advice, dont just fire it up and then switch it of, good way of killing plugs!
Rotary's like to get warmed up properly.

Re: Re5 Suzuki rotary project bike
The Mazda rotary engines inject small amounts of the engine oil into the chambers to help lube the apex seals/rotor tips (everyone complains that they use oil, but it's actually by design.
A common mod is a secondary two stroke tank that squirts 2t in as well.
Wonder if just mixing two smoke in with the fuel would help keep the tips healthier?

Works for piston rings on two strokes, you'd need to go up a size on the mains and pilots to be safeKungFooBob wrote: Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:00 pm The Mazda rotary engines inject small amounts of the engine oil into the chambers to help lube the apex seals/rotor tips (everyone complains that they use oil, but it's actually by design.

I'm pretty sure the RE5 had oil injection for the combustion chamber, if memory serves me correctly the same tank served the automatic chain oiler too.

The VanVeen came to my mind as soon as Top Trumps was mentioned. The Speyer Technical Museum in Germany has 26 Munch Mammoths.
Not seen an RE5 in that colour before.

Also depends how they calculated it despite it being badged as a 588 ....... by fudging the results and calculations Norton managed to enter it in classes with a 750 cc limit, classes with 1000cc limit and even managed to get it into 500cc GP with a couple of appearances as i remember thinking at the time "how the fuck did they get that into a 500cc class". Ron Haslam raced it in the British GP early 90's and also the support Superbike race that weekend which were for 750's of the day ..... Got hammered in the GP race but won the Superbike raceHorse wrote: Wed Jul 21, 2021 1:17 pm NortonThe F1 road bike was loosely based on it, with the Commander (?) tourer (mainly sold to police and RAC.
And only viable for racing due to how the cc of a rotary is calculated.

Norton, playing fast and loose with numbers. Obviously a tradition in the company.Bigyin wrote: Wed Sep 01, 2021 10:55 pmAlso depends how they calculated it despite it being badged as a 588 ....... by fudging the results and calculations Norton managed to enter it in classes with a 750 cc limit, classes with 1000cc limit and even managed to get it into 500cc GP with a couple of appearances as i remember thinking at the time "how the fuck did they get that into a 500cc class". A German buddy of mine had three of them, plus assorted engines. He completed the Iron Butt on one.

ISTR that the entry into the British GP was a special dispensation.Cousin Jack wrote: Thu Sep 02, 2021 10:22 amNorton, playing fast and loose with numbers. Raced at the NW200 and UGP in the 750s, I can remember Robert Dunlop hanging on for grim death up through Dhu Varren, christ they were loud!Bigyin wrote: Wed Sep 01, 2021 10:55 pmAlso depends how they calculated it despite it being badged as a 588 ....... by fudging the results and calculations Norton managed to enter it in classes with a 750 cc limit, classes with 1000cc limit and even managed to get it into 500cc GP with a couple of appearances as i remember thinking at the time "how the fuck did they get that into a 500cc class".
