Re: How's yer driveshaft
Tbh, I don't quite understand why pre 2013 models aren't included. My mate has the last air-cooled adventure on a 13 plate and no recall. The swing arm is on the other side but same set up afaik.
He's had issues with water getting into the final drive oil and speed sensor giving up twice.Oil looking milky. There's a breather and a common mod is to basically extend this breather with some pipe, higher up the bike which hes just done.

Quite possibly, can't really remember but the shaft didn't snap I don't think. I thought it sounded like the bevel gears had disintegrated or something, but it may have been be the shaft. I'm pretty sure he was there with a mate but I can't remember what he was riding.Whysub wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 3:33 pmWasn't a bloke called Chris was it? If so he was a former colleague as he went to Flashes and the drive shaft snapped during his trip.Count Steer wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 12:17 pm I saw/heard one of the early versions (that they put on the 1200GS) cry 'enough!' on a very new 1200GS on a Flash tour. It sounded like a washing machine full of marbles. The bloke had been caning it when it was probably still in the 'treat gently' stage of ownership, but still...
(The BMW recovery and get the rider home from France was pretty good though).
Never had any problems with my 4.![]()
He has since owned an Aprilia, a KTM and a Ducati and never had many issues with them, despite riding them hard all the time.

Re: How's yer driveshaft
Just had a call from bmw, bike all done and needed new shaft, failed test. Picking it up tomorrow with more questions to ask.
Afaik, it's a vibration test with a pass or fail.

Picked up bike today, took it for a cuppa, covered it in road shite, first wash completed, will need a bit more tomorrow, maybe.
They drill swingarm and put in a little rubber breather to stop water building up inside. Overall, very happy, new driveshaft at no cost to me. It's a keeper.

Re: How's yer driveshaft
and another thing...
If I had a pre 2013 GS or summot like, I'd be drilling a little hole and if any water comes out, getting on the bmw hq, cos I think earlier bikes should be recalled aswel, with swinger on other side that is.
Chap at work drilled his 2009 and water came out. He got onto bmw Shrewsbury and they said no, but I reckon it's only a matter of time.
