That was on the telly a couple of days ago. Think it was a programme about 'the age of the canal'. They were legging it through the Standedge. I always thought they lay on their backs and walked on the roof, but there's v little clearance.

Surely make more sense to lay in line with the boat. Then muscles work naturally.
Bit weird to work the legs sideways
But seemed to work OK.

Depends on the height of the tunnel over the barge etc etc.

I have actually tried it, just for a laugh. We did a couple of canal boat holidays when I was a kid/teenager and we gave it go.
Lying on your back on the roof and walking backwards was easiest IIRC, but that relies on the roof being close enough! There was also one tunnel (which we didn't try legging) where the roof practically scrapes the top of your boat due to subsidence. Harecastle, or something like that, I seem to remember.

The boat , if loaded, would be too far down in the water.

The wind normally blows from N.W. but today its from S.W. that brings hot weather (30c now) and dust storm from Africa.
Was sunny and blue skies this morning. Everything outside is covered in dust/sand.
Just been to a mates and couldn't see the volcanoes.
